Benefits of Using Private Air Charter for Business Travel ? steve ...

Let?s face it, flying can be a stressful process for business travel. Between navigating your way through airports, security checks and staying on time, it can be mentally and physically taxing. To combat the pains of traditional flying, it?s smart to use a private air charter for your business travel. On that note, let?s discuss some reasons why this form of travel is beneficial.

Convenience
Perhaps the biggest advantage is simply the convenience. When flying on a traditional, public airplane, there are numerous complications to deal with. For example, you have to stick to a rigid flight schedule and will often be faced with delays that can affect the rest of your schedule. Using a private air charter is better because you don?t have to worry about these hassles. Instead, you can depart whenever you?re ready and don?t have to worry about missing your flight. You also don?t have to worry about standing in ticket lines or baggage check-ins which should save considerable time. For this reason, you can relax and don?t have to rush around airports in an attempt to catch your flight.

Security
Another perk is the level of security you can enjoy with a private air charter. Since you will only be flying with people in your group, you don?t have to worry about potentially dangerous situations that sometimes arise when flying. Due to the inherent risk that comes with flying with a group of strangers in a commercial airplane, flying privately should leave you feeling much more at ease. Also, you don?t have to deal with security checkpoints of commercial airports and the often intensive screening procedures.

Luxury
Along with this, you should experience a level of luxury that?s impossible with most commercial flights. For example, you won?t have to be uncomfortably crammed into small seats with strangers. This can be especially nice if you?re prone to feeling claustrophobic in certain situations. You don?t have to deal with the boarding and unboarding process where you often have to stand in line for lengthy periods of time. You should have access to fine catering and better meals than on a public flight. You don?t have to fight for the attention of a stewardess to be served. It?s also more relaxed in general and should have you feeling more refreshed once you arrive at your destination.

Closer to Your Desintation
In addition, you have much better options when it comes to the airport you pick as your destination. For example, many commercial flights require you to land in large airports in big cities. The problem is that these locations are sometimes up to 100 miles away from your intended destination. When this happens, it makes it even more stressful to stick to your schedule. However, flying privately means that you have more of a choice when it comes to the airport you land at. This means that you can land in smaller cities that are significantly closer to your final destination.

Steve Ulrich is a principal at Bay Integrated Marketing: www.bayintegratedmarketing.com. Thank you for your interest. My approach is simple. Instead of spending a fortune ?buying? keywords and ads that don?t return anything we concentrate on three areas: Most people?s websites, however pretty, are simply brochures. They say nice things about the company but don?t offer anything or ask the prospect to DO something you want them to do. We fix that. Publishing is the easiest way to get the message out. We set up a syndicated site so that when you create a piece of content it goes automatically to ALL of your social media sites, simultaneously. Not a writer? We will set you up with a site where you can get all the content you want for free. We set up and maintain profiles, sites, and ?Fan Pages? where people can find you, follow you, and like you. We generate campaigns and content to motivate your prospects to want to find you. There are more searches for local professional services on FaceBook and LinkedIn than Google, and you can still rank quite highly in your local area. This is a low cost, low risk approach that can drastically grow your business without breaking your bank.

Chairman of key U.S. congressional committee has lymphoma

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Rep. Dave Camp, a Michigan Republican who chairs the powerful House Ways and Means committee, announced on Saturday that he will undergo treatment for non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a cancer that starts in parts of the body's immune system.

"After a recent routine yearly physical, it was discovered that I have a very early, highly treatable and curable type of non-Hodgkins lymphoma - large B-cell lymphoma," Camp said in a statement.

The statement said he would have chemotherapy every three weeks for the next few months and would continue his work in the House of Representatives during treatment.

He said he and his doctors expect "a full recovery and cure."

It can be quite disappointing for your fridge to breakdown when you have just restocked it or for your washing machine to start leaking when you have a lot of cloths to wash. It is always helpful to have the contact details of a technician who can help you as soon as possible. It may be wise to try and find an appliance repair Northridge company whose services you can trust.

As much as you may be desperate to find a solution you have to carefully weigh your options. Compare the various technicians that you come across before choosing one. One of the best ways to find a credible firm is through referrals from people you know. Since most of the people have utilized their services then they are sure about the quality of services the firm offers.

Talking to your Realtor will give you good leads. This is because most Realtors deal with various service providers on a regular basis so you can be sure that they will know who is good and who is not. Find out if they have a regular firm that they deal with then you can hire their services.

The Internet is a good place to start your search. This is because you will find many useful links as there are many professionals who advertise themselves online. Find any shop that deals with the machine you need fixed and ask if they also offer repair services. Most of them do and would be willing to fix your machine for you at an agreed price. The shop you initially purchased the machine from may also offer repair services.

The level of experience the business has been in trade is of utmost importance. This will assure you of quality services. Make sure that the business has been licensed and insured. If there is anything you are uncertain about then do not hesitate to ask questions.

Know how much you will be charged by the company. Ensure that the company explains everything to you and that there are no hidden charges. Whether you opt to go for a big company or a small one you should always expect to receive personalized attention. You should be able to get in touch with the technician and discuss any of your concerns with them.

Don't Let a Collection Scam Put Your Law Firm Out of Business | The ...

Guest contributor Christopher C. Carr , Esq., MBA describes a debt collection scheme that nearly took him in and what attorneys can learn from his experience.

Wolf in sheep's clothing

Sometimes clients aren't as they appear.

A single fraudulent transaction can easily wipe out the entire bank account of a small firm and expose the firm and members of the firm to lawsuits in the matter of just a few days. ?A few years back I was taken in by a fraud scheme, and suffered what was luckily a much smaller loss, so when another scam came in through my email a year ago, I knew how read the signs.

In this most recent case, I would have been defrauded to the tune of $180,000 by a collection scheme that came in through my email. A supposed British subject hired me to collect $600,000 owed her under a very real looking promissory note from her ex-husband, a West Chester, Pennsylvania resident. I even got her to sign a fee agreement. The background of their relationship and source of the debt is beyond the scope of this article; suffice it to say that their ruse was very detailed and convincing.

These two had a relationship alright, but it wasn?t the one they told me about.

When I contacted him by email threatening suit, the correspondent in the fraud (the supposed ex) hemmed and hawed a bit (to make it look realistic) but ultimately agreed to pay a large installment on the debt. A Fed Ex pack duly arrived a few days later containing a check written on a Nova Scotia bank. I called the bank and verified that he was a customer of the bank but they would not tell me his balance for reasons of privacy.? I then deposited the check in my bank and watched my ?available balance? soar.? The fee letter required me to remit the proceeds less my fee by wire to an account in the UK.? Had I done so, I and my bank would have been left holding the bag for hundreds of thousands. So I waited. ?I ultimately got a notice from my bank that the check had been dishonored upon presentation to the Nova Scotia bank, which took about 10 days from the time of my deposit.

The couple perpetrating the international fraud obviously counted on this ?float? period where I had funds in my account that did not really exist. Clearly their check was written on a foreign bank to try and extend this time as long as possible.

I contacted the local police who took a police report but nothing ever came of it. Although I didn?t suffer any loss in this instance, there would have been little or no insurance coverage for such a loss, had it occurred.

The only traceable elements of this scam typically are:

  • The account (and routing information) into which the proceeds are to be paid
  • The IP address of the defrauder (where the computer or other device is located in the world). It cannot be cloaked and can be checked using a free service available via the internet.

This information can be of use in detecting fraudulent activity as to avoid detection and apprehension these people will rarely be where they say they are.? This should be a dead giveaway.

My advice is to fellow attorneys is to stay on alert when it comes to transferring large sums of money.? Never take anything for granted, and you won?t get taken for granted.

Concocting The Right Business Strategy: Organizational Value ...

A cornerstone of corporate strategy is knowing your organization?s true value proposition and using that knowledge to innovate the business model so that existing customers can be better served and share of markets can be extended. Developing effective strategy requires business leaders to examine their value statements and to learn how to utilize and navigate the Organizational Value Quadrant (OVQ)1 model. The four quadrants of organizational value define distinct operating models that relate the company?s positioning relative to the markets served by the business. Knowing which quadrant your business lives in and understanding how to navigate within the OVQ form the backbone of every strategic plan. This article explains the organizational value quadrants, and what they mean to a business in terms of strategy and investment.

Value Proposition; how well do you know it and live it?

For any business, understanding the company?s value proposition is the first step in strategy formulation and must be addressed as a key input to the OVQ discussion.

A value proposition can be thought of a business or marketing statement that summarizes why a consumer should?buy a product or use a service. In essence, this statement should help the firm connect with a potential target market in a way that differentiates a particular?product or service as to how it will add more?value or solve a problem better than other similar offerings.

?

The purest three elements of a value proposition are:

The connection: What is it that makes the product or service inspirational and innovative? The connection must compel the customer to want the product and say, ?I need this?.

The differentiation: What is it that makes the product or service indispensable? The differentiation should help eliminate the thought of substitutes in the mind of the buyer.

The substantiation: What facts can you state about the product or service to help create credibility and trust? The substantiation should help the potential buyer to believe in the product or service and take action.

Organizational Value Quadrants

Businesses operate on models designed for value creation that are in alignment with their stated value propositions for each class of products and services. While the value proposition helps communicate the marketing and sales message, the business model must deliver the value promised. That leads to the discussion of value quadrants.

Strategists should always be thinking in terms of value quadrants when considering their firm?s competitive positioning. Method Frameworks focuses on four primary quadrants to classify the business model a company is following. The quadrants are? shown in the graphic below:

?

Each quadrant represents the focus of a company or business unit and can be thought of as the strategy and business model generally being followed. Below is a synopsis of each quadrant:

The Customer Intimacy & Synergy Quadrant

Companies operating in the Customer Intimacy & Synergy Quadrant focus on the customization and tailoring of products / services. Their missions are geared toward know their customers well, delivering what specific customers want and ?personalizing? the experience.

Customers of businesses in this quadrant have the expectation of a close relationship that is solution-based for their needs. In return, they are willing to accept a higher cost for the goods or services they are purchasing.

The Operational & Organizational Excellence Quadrant

Companies operating in the Operational & Organizational Excellence Quadrant focus operational efficiencies, supply-chain optimization, maintaining low overhead and accomplishing more with lean structures. Their missions are focused on creating predictability in delivering quality, low price, no-hassle purchase experiences and ease of use.

Customers of businesses in this quadrant have the expectation of low cost and best pricing. In return, they are willing to accept less in the areas of service and relationship intimacy.

The Customer Enrichment & Fulfillment Quadrant

Companies operating in the Customer Enrichment & Fulfillment Quadrant focus on helping their customers reaching and fulfilling their potential. Their mission themes relate to creating better lives for their customers and the opportunity for self-actualization.

Customers of businesses in this quadrant have the expectation of enjoying an experience and learning through exploration and discovery. In return, they are willing to accept a higher cost for the goods or services they are purchasing.

The Product / Service Superiority & Innovation Quadrant

Companies operating in the Product / Service Superiority & Innovation Quadrant focus on creating superior or unique ?One-of-a-Kind? value-add services or products. Their missions are geared towards innovation and creating the best products and services available in their class.

Customers of businesses in this quadrant have the expectation of receiving high quality and benefiting from innovation in the products or services being purchased. In return, they are willing to accept a higher cost for the goods or services they are purchasing.

Utilizing The Quadrants In Strategic Planning

Each quadrant groups companies relative to their value propositions and respective customer expectations. Most companies standardize on a business model and force a fit of that model to all their customers. Although it may seem illogical to combine a strategy of individual service (custom-tailored and expensive) with a model of operational excellence (where cost-minimization requires a high degree of process standardization), it can and has been done successfully. A business does not have to be entirely committed to an exclusive relationship with only one category and can use strategy to navigate and position themselves in different quadrants of the OVQ.

Sales organizations have developed impressive sophistication in analyzing their customers and segmenting them appropriately. Likewise, CFOs are highly tuned into profit analysis and many have developed the equivalent of ?heat maps? for profitability. Together, they have analyzed their sales and profit data and have developed a clear understanding of which customers are providing them with high sustained profitability. With this combined insight, customer segmentation can then be applied to strategically approach these profit areas with segment sub-strategies. Segment strategy can be applied to invest resources in securing and growing key customer relationships through integration of the company?s operations with those of the key customer?s in a tailored? and effective approach. When this approach is followed, the investments can result in lowering key customer?s cost while increasing the profits of the supplier business.

Customer integration within a value quadrant can be accomplished by tuning customer inventories, smoothing order patterns and even deploying substitute products in carefully-selected situations. The key is to partner with key customers and shift the focus of supply chain efficiency initiatives from optimization solely within the organization?s supply-chain ecosystem to an optimization of the joint vendor-customer supply chain domain. This shift creates enormous new efficiencies for both organizations and helps increase the cost of switching vendors for the customer in the future.

The example above illustrates how an organization can straddle both the operational excellence and the customer intimacy quadrants. With strategic positioning companies can begin to dominate in other quadrants through the creation of other differentiated serving models for important customer segments. Through careful strategic planning and follow-though in execution, a business can actually implement and sustain multiple parallel service models to operate successfully across quadrants.

Recap

Business leaders must begin with a clear and realistic understanding of their value proposition, the first step in strategy formulation that must be addressed as a key input to the Organizational Value Quadrant analysis. A value proposition can be thought of a business or marketing statement that summarizes why a consumer should?buy a product or use a service.

The purest three elements of a value proposition are the connection, the differentiation and the substantiation. While the value proposition helps communicate the marketing and sales message, the business model (represented by quadrants of the OVQ model) must deliver the value promised. Each quadrant represents the focus of a company or business unit and can be thought of as the strategy and business model generally being followed. The four primary quadrants to classify the business model a company are:

- Operational & Organizational Excellence

- Product / Service Superiority & Innovation

- Customer Enrichment & Fulfillment

- Customer Intimacy & Synergy

Most importantly, a business does not have to be entirely committed to an exclusive relationship with only one category and can use strategy to navigate and position themselves in different quadrants of the OVQ.

Pros and Cons of Online Tutoring

Internet infrastructure has developed to a point that it has become extremely easy and convenient to hire an online tutor. This option usually presents itself as a dilemma to parents looking to hire a tutor for their child. While it is easy to presume that live teaching can in no way match the experience of having the teacher physically present, the experience actually varies depending on the student?s age, his/her comfort with technology, the subject taught and the experience levels of the educator. Let?s take a look at some of the pros and cons of online tutoring in more detail.

PROS:

a) Online tutoring eliminates the need to travel for either the student or the educator. This not only saves time, but also money, making live coaching far more cost efficient.

b) Older students accustomed to Internet technologies will generally find online mentoring more comfortable than home coaching.

c) Evolution of software technologies has reached such a point that, an educator could write, dictate, speak or draw in real time while the student watches. The mentor too, is able to view the student?s work real time. This real time face-to-face interaction maintains a personal touch to teaching, while the distance assures the parents the safety of their kids.

d) Recording is possible when it comes to one-on-one lessons, this enables the student to visit back on any of the older lessons for more efficient revisions. These recordings can also provide a valuable insight to parents about the quality of the lessons provided.

e) Finally live tutoring provides a lot of flexibility with timings, content of the subject, quality of the teacher etc. Since distance is never an issue, a good instructor is easier to find.

CONS:

a) No matter how you look at it, live tutoring keeps the student physically away from the teacher, allowing for mischievous or unruly behaviour.

b) Lack of quality Internet access can severely hamper the quality of online teaching. Other than this, software compatibility issues, user experience in dealing with computers etc. can have a negative impact on the quality of education.

c) Students participating in such programs might simply email each other and chat online since distances involved make it impossible to physically meet. This might hamper social skills in young children.

As with most things, live coaching might be a good thing or a bad thing. It is up to you to gauge the personality of your child and the value of a given tutor, and decide if online is the way to go or not.

There are numerous pros and cons of online tutoring, but if you want to hire an expert ok tutor you should thoroughly search for him. And remember: there is no shame in getting a tutor!

Georgia freezes opposition footballer's bank funds

TBILISI (Reuters) - A Georgian court froze the bank accounts of retired footballer and opposition leader Kakha Kaladze in a money-laundering probe on Friday that opponents foes of President Mikhail Saakhshvili's government say is a campaign of legal harassment.

The football star, who won the Champions League twice with Italy's AC Milan, will stand against the ruling party in October parliamentary polls as part of a newly formed Georgian Dream coalition led by billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili.

Ivanishvili, 56, whose fortune is estimated at $6.4 billion by Forbes magazine, has united and breathed new life into the fractured opposition in the Caucasus state of 4.5 million, angering the government, which still leads opinion polls.

"It's obvious that it's a political persecution," Maya Panjikidze, a spokeswoman for Georgian Dream, said of the latest case to dog the opposition coalition.

"We consider the court's decision as illegal," she said.

Georgia's chief prosecutor's office said in a statement that Kaladze was under suspicion after he received $6 million on his bank account and then withdrawn 1.6 million lari ($97,000) "in a short period of time".

Saakashvili became the West's darling when he rose to power after the bloodless "rose revolution" that toppled Eduard Shevardnadze in 2003. But opponents have since accused him of curbing political freedom and criticize him for leading Georgia into a brief, disastrous war with Russia in August 2008.

In the latest twist in the standoff between Saakashvili's government and his foes, a Georgian court on Friday released assets seized from Ivanishvili after he paid a $49 million fine.

Ivanishvili's Cartu Bank, JSC Cartu Group, and a 21.7-percent share in Progress Bank were seized in June after the billionaire refused to pay a multi-million dollar fine.

At the time, Ivanishvili argued it was illegal to confiscate the assets, saying he had passed all shares in the companies to his son. State authorities, however, said the asset transfer had not been registered with the Georgian National Bank.

Ivanishvili paid the 80-million-lari fine earlier this week, but maintained the penalty was "illegal".

A once-reclusive tycoon, Ivanishvili and his family have come under the state scrutiny in a myriad of cases since he launched a political movement last year.

Trial shows China eager to end Bo Xilai scandal

China's decision to try fallen politician Bo Xilai's wife for murder underscores Communist leaders' determination to draw a line under a scandal that has engulfed the party ahead of a power handover, analysts say.

China announced Thursday that Bo's wife Gu Kailai and an aide to the couple had been charged with poisoning British businessman Neil Heywood, who was found dead in a hotel room in the southwestern city of Chongqing last November.

It was the latest development in a sensational case that has brought down one of the country's most high-profile political leaders and exposed deep divisions in the ruling Communist party ahead of a once-in-a-decade leadership handover.

Bo, the son of a revered Communist revolutionary, won national fame with a draconian crackdown on criminal elements in Chongqing and a "red revival" campaign marked by the mass singing of old Maoist-era songs.

The rapid unravelling of his fortunes earlier this year exposed a harsh factional reaction against the charismatic Chongqing party secretary, who had ambitions to join the elite nine-member group that effectively rules China.

Analysts said Thursday's announcement indicated that senior Communist chiefs, keen to settle the Bo affair before a new generation takes the reins of power later this year, had reached broad agreement on his fate.

"There won't be any more surprises. They are trying to shift the focus to Gu Kailai, so it is quite possible that Bo Xilai will not be treated harshly," said Willy Lam, a China expert at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

"This could be out of necessity for party unity, for the sake of harmony before the party Congress."

Several academics said the announcement indicated that Bo, who is being investigated by the party for "violating party discipline" -- usually code for corruption -- would be spared criminal charges.

This was likely the result of a deal between competing factions within the party ahead of the upcoming Congress, when China's most senior officials will relinquish their party positions to a new generation of leaders, they said.

"With these cases being dealt with at this time, I expect there to be smooth sailing to the 18th Party Congress," said Boston University international relations expert Joseph Fewsmith.

"There may be some bargaining to go, but most of it has been done."

Joseph Cheng, political analyst with Hong Kong City University, said the Party's determination to present a united front before the handover meant Gu's trial would "demonstrate that the case has nothing to do with Bo Xilai".

"I think the political considerations are more important to the authorities than ensuring a fair trial," he added.

Thursday's announcement on state news agency Xinhua said there was "irrefutable and substantial" evidence that Gu had poisoned Heywood after he threatened her son following a row over "economic interests".

The British businessman reportedly had commercial dealings with Bo and his wife going back several years.

China's state-run media have positioned Bo's downfall and Gu's trial as evidence that no leader is above punishment for misdeeds, in a country where official corruption remains a major source of public discontent.

An editorial in both the English and Chinese-language editions of the state-run Global Times daily on Friday said the trial would test "whether the principle that everybody is equal before the law truly stands".

Beijing is also under pressure from London to ensure that justice is done following the murder of a British national.

But analysts said the wording of the Xinhua announcement indicated that Gu was certain to be found guilty. If convicted of murder she faces the death penalty, although this is often commuted in the case of high-profile defendants.

It is not yet clear when the trial, to be held in the eastern city of Hefei, will take place, but experts, including City University's Cheng, said it would likely be next month.

"The leadership wants to have the issue settled publicly in response to domestic and internal pressure before the Congress," he said.

Saudi Arabia seeks new UN resolution on Syria

Saudi Arabia is proposing a UN General Assembly resolution which will highlight a Syrian government threat to use chemical weapons, its UN envoy said Wednesday.

The new Arab initiative follows the failure of a western-attempt to get the UN Security Council to threaten sanctions against Syria's President Bashar al-Assad over the 16-month-old conflict, diplomats said. Russia and China vetoed the council resolution last week.

Saudi Arabia's UN Ambassador Abdallah al-Mouallimi told a small group of reporters the resolution would be submitted in coming days and he hoped for a vote "probably early next week."

Asked whether the resolution would mention the Syrian government's threat made this week to use its chemical weapons if attacked, al-Mouallimi said "it will reference all of the issues that are of significance in the Syrian situation."

UN diplomats said the resolution could call on the 193 UN member states to follow sanctions that have been ordered against Syria by the Arab League. That would be opposed by Russia and China after their veto last Thursday.

The resolution could also demand humanitarian access to conflict-stricken parts of Syria, the diplomats said on condition of anonymity as talks on the resolution are still private.

The UN General Assembly cannot force legally binding sanctions, like the 15-nation Security Council. But no country can veto any of its resolutions which just need a majority.

A General Assembly resolution passed in February brought the Syria conflict back to the forefront of UN debate after Russia and China blocked two earlier Security Council resolutions.

"The Arab states are frustrated at the lack of international action on Syria, particularly the vetos by Russia and China," said one UN diplomat.

Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states have voiced strong support for Syrian rebels against Assad. The 16-month-old conflict has left more than 19,000 dead, according to Syrian activists.

Higgs-spotting is much easier in Flatland

CALL them the alternative Higgs hunters. A group of researchers has glimpsed a simulated version of the elusive particle in the behaviour of a handful of atoms on a lab bench.

In marked contrast to the high-energy collisions of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, where the real Higgs boson was made, the atoms in the new work were arranged in an ultracold, flat array. The work suggests that something like the Higgs mechanism, which is thought to have given mass to elementary particles in the hot, early universe, operates in a range of physical situations. Similar physics could even be at play in the alternate universes that pop up in some versions of string theory, if they turn out to exist.

"It says a lot about the unity of physics, and how this is a deep and fundamental concept that appears in many different physical situations," says Subir Sachdev of Harvard University, who studies ultracold systems but was not involved in the new work.

The Higgs boson that appears in the standard model of particle physics is the calling card of the omnipresent Higgs field. The field cannot be observed, but high-energy protons smashing into each other inside the LHC can "shake" the field and produce Higgs bosons.

Thanks to the wave-particle duality of quantum mechanics, Higgs bosons can also be thought of as waves that appear in the Higgs field when it is shaken. This idea allowed a team led by Immanuel Bloch of the Max-Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Munich, Germany, to test whether the Higgs mechanism could be at play in a cold, two-dimensional system.

The team trapped about 500 rubidium atoms in a vacuum chamber and cooled them to a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero. Then the team exposed the atoms to a pattern of criss-crossed laser beams. To the atoms, the pattern looked like an egg carton: the bright areas were wells where the atoms tended to settle, and the dark areas were barriers in between.

When the laser light was intense, the wells were deep, and each held one atom. But when the light was fainter, the wells grew shallow, allowing the atoms to tunnel between them, then spread out and form a single quantum entity. At the boundary between those two phases, the equations governing the atoms are the same as those that govern the Higgs field. So the transition from one atom per well to the single quantum state is analogous to shaking the Higgs field.

When the team brightened and then dimmed the lasers, the atoms collectively made a wave. This "Higgs mode" was the equivalent of the Higgs boson in their simulated Higgs field, report the team (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature11255). "We are calling it Higgs in Flatland," says Bloch, referring to the 1884 novella set in a two-dimensional worldMovie Camera.

But the two-dimensional Higgs mode could have real effects. For example, some suggest that the mathematics behind such flat systems could come into play in versions of string theory. "It's remarkable how there's this beautiful experiment here, and the LHC, all coming about at the same time," adds Sachdev.

Soldier said he endured slurs from sergeant charged in death

FORT BRAGG, North Carolina (Reuters) - A black soldier testified at a court-martial on Wednesday that he endured racial slurs from the same U.S. Army sergeant whose hazing, according to military officials, led a Chinese-American soldier to commit suicide.

Private Marcus Merritt said he also considered killing himself to escape the verbal abuse of Sergeant Adam Holcomb, who Merritt said called him "niglet" and threatened to send him home from Afghanistan in a body bag.

"He was in my face constantly," Merritt said on the second day of Holcomb's military trial in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Holcomb, 30, is accused of hazing both Merritt and Private Danny Chen, a 19-year-old born in New York City to Chinese immigrant parents.

The sergeant faces a more serious allegation of negligent homicide in connection with Chen's death. Military prosecutors say Holcomb's physical mistreatment and racial harassment pushed Chen to kill himself by gunshot in a guard tower in southern Afghanistan last October.

Holcomb, who has pleaded not guilty, faces nearly 18 years of confinement and a dishonorable discharge if convicted of the charges against him.

Seven of Chen's other superiors from the Alaska-based 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division were also charged in the case and will be tried separately.

Holcomb's attorneys argue Chen killed himself because he was failing as an infantryman and had been disowned by his parents for joining the Army - an assertion Chen's mother and father denied from the witness stand.

The service members who testified on Wednesday described Chen as an inexperienced soldier who struggled with the heat, routines and physical demands of deployment after joining a small unit in Afghanistan in August.

NEVER MENTIONED SUICIDE

Specialist Zachary Bolin, a platoon medic, said he kept a close eye on the new, young soldier. He said Chen was quiet and shy at first, but Bolin noticed in the week before Chen's death that he talked more and started hanging out with groups of other soldiers.

"That took my guard down," Bolin said.

In late September, Bolin said Holcomb asked him to look at Chen's back. Chen said it had gotten scraped up when the sergeant dragged him across gravel after the lower-ranked soldier left a water pump on in a shower against orders.

Chen never mentioned suicide, even when Bolin specifically asked if he was considering it, the medic said. Five other soldiers said they never saw signs Chen was suicidal.

Some said he did seem to get picked on or singled out more than others for punishment. They said they heard Holcomb call Chen racially derogatory names including "dragon lady," "Jackie Chen" and "egg roll."

Several soldiers testified Chen never said whether the names bothered him, but Private 1st Class Adrian Douglas said Chen told him the references sometimes angered him. "But he felt like he couldn't really do anything about it," Douglas said.

Holcomb's attorney said on Tuesday the sergeant only used the term "dragon lady" and meant it affectionately in a military culture where nicknames are common.

Private 1st Class Joshua Morgan said he and Chen were close friends. Though Chen usually was in good spirits during their deployment, Morgan said his friend confided that his parents had disowned him.

Chen's father, Yan Tao Chen, denied on Wednesday that he and his wife had cut off contact with their only child.

He said he thought "it was a glorious thing" that his son joined the Army. "What I am most happy about is he was able to choose what he wanted to do," he added.

Annette Powers: Connecticut

The first ultrasound came back inconclusive. I knew something wasn't right when the technician quickly left the room and came back with the doctor.

"We can't hear a heartbeat," he said matter-of-factly. "It's either too early or you have miscarried. We'll do another test in 10 days."

He said it exactly like that, with apparent disregard for how tortuous the next 10 days would be.

The next day, my husband and I left for Connecticut. We were going to visit his dad, his dad's wife, and her family in a little town on the sound. I had been excited for this vacation, but after my appointment, I was overwhelmed with fear and anticipation.

Looking back, there was no doubt that I was pregnant on that trip. I couldn't ingest anything besides saltines and ginger ale, and I slept for three hours in the middle of each afternoon. Despite all the worry about the upcoming ultrasound, I had a wonderful time being there -- lazing on the porch, chatting with my new family, playing cards, dining al fresco. There was a local lobster shack that I loved, which my husband and I had visited a few years earlier on a road trip. It was an out-of-the-way place set back in a residential area that I had found online; I was thrilled to have the chance to go there again.

We returned to Connecticut a year later, but this time with our 6-month-old son in tow. I remember vividly the pictures we took with the three of us frolicking on the beach and some of my husband and me alone, smooching with the sunset in the background. At the time, I never would have guessed that he had already started having an affair.

We separated about a year later when I discovered his infidelity. It was about a month before we were supposed to go on the annual trip to Connecticut. Needless to say, we didn't go.

The next year, my ex-husband took our son and his girlfriend (previously his mistress) back to Connecticut. I felt so left out and so bitter. It wasn't fair that she got to take vacations with my son. It wasn't fair that she got to eat grinders on the porch and wander out into the sandbar. Suddenly, someone was living my life and taking my family vacation without me.

It has now been two years since our separation. Last week, my ex, his girlfriend and our son returned to Connecticut. At the same time, I was in California having a beautiful visit with some of my best friends and close family. And though my trip was fabulous, I still found myself wondering what was happening on the East Coast -- and feeling left out.

When I Skyped with my son, his dad said, "Tell mommy where we had dinner." My ex then informed me they went to the lobster shack I loved so much. It stung to hear that, and I let my ex know. "Are you purposely trying to make me feel left out?" I asked. I knew that wasn't his intention and that he was probably trying to make a connection with me by mentioning a place I knew, but it was just more salt in an already painful wound.

Later that night, I was perusing my Facebook page when I saw a picture that had been posted by my ex-husband's stepmother. It was a picture of my ex and his girlfriend, tan and smiling in front of a dusky Connecticut sky. I gasped. I still hadn't met her and had only seen a few pictures of her alone; until that point, I had seen none of them together. It was shocking to see her in that photo instead of me.

Although we've been separated for two years, I still have a hard time facing the fact that I was cast out and replaced by another woman. It's like watching a movie in which someone else lives my life. She's lazing on the porch, playing cards, eating at the lobster shack -- and I'm watching it all go down from a distance.

I try to live in the present to, as one of my dearest friends always says, "be where my feet are." I appreciate so much that I now have the opportunity to take vacations on my own and know that my son is in good hands with his father. And yet, there are times when I can't help but fall down that hole of despair and self pity. I guess it's part of the whole "two steps forward, two steps back" aspect of the healing process.

Last week would have been our five-year wedding anniversary. In keeping with the tradition of giving wooden gifts at the half-decade anniversary, I wonder what I would have given him if we were still married. Perhaps a new desk chair to replace the wobbly, uncomfortable one he has? Or maybe a nice wood valet for him to stash his keys, wallet and phone? No, I probably would have invited him to steal away with me for a romantic rendezvous in a wood cabin... in Connecticut.

How to Demand (and Get!) Great Customer Service ? Experimental ...

My family recently replaced our windows replaced. It was an ordeal that turned out to be long and expensive. When the company installed windows that weren?t even the right color, I had to make several angry phone calls to the general manager and owner to get the problem solved. And along the way, I learned a few valuable lessons about customer service.

Gone are the days when airline passengers could expect a warm meal or department store customers knew that managers would go out of their way to make the shopping experience pleasant. Spending money today can be a real chore because most companies have lost an emphasis on customer service. It isn?t just the companies? fault?it?s our fault, too, for paying more attention to price-tags than the quality of the things we buy and the way we?re treated when we buy them.

It?s harder to get great customer service today, but that doesn?t mean we should give up trying. Not only do we get more value for our hard-earned money, but we also push companies to make their stores better places to work and shop.

Next time you run into a customer service dilemma, here for demanding that businesses treat you as a valued customer:

  • Be willing to pay for good customer service. When you?re budgeting, don?t just focus on price. Think instead about value. Your money pays not only for the product, but for the experience of buying and using it, hopefully for many years to come.
  • Shop local.?Using vendors that depend on the business of every customer is another way to avoid customer service fiascos. Even when they arise, local companies are more likely to go out of their way to earn your business back.
  • Shop with companies with a good reputation for customer service. By shopping with companies that treat customers right, you?re less likely to have problems to begin with. Use a service like Angie?s List or Yelp and ask for friends? and neighbors? reviews. When you have to use a big company, defer to one with a solid customer service rep like Apple, Disney, Hilton hotels, Southwest Airlines, or Zappos.com.
  • Use a credit card company known for taking the customer?s side. When a purchase goes wrong, you don?t have to fight alone. Buying something on a credit card that believes the customer is always right means you?ll always have someone else on your side. Adam and I have had great success with our American Express card.
  • Expect good customer service from the get-go. My family has learned the hard way that companies that start out with bad customer service usually don?t get any better. When something goes wrong early in a transaction, don?t make apologies or excuses for the company. Give them a chance to fix it if you like, but be prepared to find another vendor if they let you down again.
  • When you need to make a complaint, wait until you can do it calmly. In many cases, the employee listening to your complaint isn?t the one who caused a problem. By waiting until you?re calm, you avoid taking out your anger on someone who doesn?t deserve it. And you?re more likely to get what you want if you can speak rationally and in a level tone of voice.
  • Always start out pleasant. It really is true that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Sometimes customer service complaints must get heated, but you can resolve many issues with a polite phone call or e-mail.
  • Make specific complaints and offer specific solutions. When you make a complaint, tell the person to whom you are speaking exactly what went wrong and exactly how you would like him or her to fix it. Not, ?This food is terrible,? but, ?My steak is cold and my mashed potatoes are over-salted. I would like you to prepare me another meal.? Not only do you sound more convincing, but you?re making it easier for the company to make things right.
  • Be clear about the consequences for the business. You don?t have to threaten a company to let them know you mean business. A simple line like, ?I?m a loyal customer, but sorry I won?t be able to do business with you anymore? or ?I?ll have to tell my neighbors not to do business with your company? often does the trick.
  • If necessary, send your complaint up. Even though more and more employees are refusing to refer complaints up to their managers, managers and owners are in a much better position to solve your problem. Ask for a manager. If you?re refused, ask for the manager?s direct line or e-mail address. When you can?t get in touch with a manager?or the manager doesn?t propose a satisfactory resolution?never be afraid to call or write an owner or C.E.O. Write down the name of everyone you speak to about your complaint as you move up the corporate ladder.
  • Be willing to compromise. When you propose a solution, stick to reasonable demands and be prepared for some give and take as you negotiate with the company. For example, a hotel may not be able to give you a free room because your neighbors were loud?but do expect them to give you a discount or offer you a free breakfast.
  • Know when to walk away. Certain fights just aren?t worth the effort. Time is money, so before you bunker down for a long, drawn out conflict, decide whether the payoff is going to be worth the time you will spend arguing. Sometimes it is, but when it?s not, shake the dust from your feet and find somewhere else to do business.
  • Give credit where credit is due.?When you get great customer service?or when someone finally solves a customer service problem for you in a way that makes you happy?be sure to thank the person who is responsible, in writing if possible. There is no better way to encourage employees to focus on customer service than to reward them with your sincere gratitude for treating you right.

Have you ever had to fight with a company over a purchase you?ve made? How did you handle it? Let us know in the comments.

Get Protection For Your Internet Devices | Business 2 Community

People today rely on technology far more than in any other time. We entrust so many details about ourselves and our finances to our computers that each box on a desk represents a treasure trove of information for any hackers out there who can gain access to our hard drives.

And it?s not just our desktops that are at risk. Now, with the number of smartphones that have access to the internet, we are becoming ever more exposed to potential fraudulent activity via hackers? viruses that are roaming the internet.

The best way you can protect yourself and the information about you that is contained on your devices that you use to access the internet is to get some good internet security installed. This isn?t complicated ? it just requires a little research and then a simple download.? In fact, if you don?t have time to do any research, you can download a free antivirus software program immediately, and then take your time choosing a paid for subscription.

Most internet security providers offer free trials of varying lengths, such as the the Kaspersky internet security range, is available as a trial for 30 days. Downloading a trial version of the software gives you a chance to see how it works and to decide whether it is compatible with your system. You?ll be able to see how long a virus scan of the hard drive takes and see how easy (or not) it is to operate the software.

Antivirus software will block any viruses that are detected, and the paid for subscriptions will supply you with new virus signatures as they are discovered. It is estimated that hundreds of viruses are released onto the web on a daily basis, so this isn?t something that you can install and just forget about. Make sure that you run regular updates, and that you don?t let your subscription run out.

Of course, if you sign up to a particular internet security package and then find it?s not great for you to work with, you can always stop the subscription after the minimum period and install a different one. Like all things to do with technology, internet security is evolving constantly, and there?ll always be a better package for a better price available soon.

New lab working on security shoe sole to ID people

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? High-tech security? Forget those irksome digital eye scans. Meet the biometric shoe.

A new lab is working to perfect special shoe insoles that can help monitor access to high-security areas, like nuclear power plants or special military bases.

The concept is based on research that shows each person has unique feet, and ways of walking. Sensors in the bio-soles check the pressure of feet, monitor gait, and use a microcomputer to compare the patterns to a master file for that person. If the patterns match the bio-soles go to sleep. If they don't, a wireless alarm message can go out.

"It's part of a shoe that you don't have to think about," said Marios Savvides, head of Carnegie Mellon University's new Pedo-Biometrics Lab, in Pittsburgh.

The lab, which has $1.5 million in startup funding, is a partnership with Autonomous ID, a Canadian company that is relocating to several U.S. cities. Todd Gray, the company president, said he saw the potential when his daughter was in a maternity ward decorated with representations of different baby feet all along a wall.

Autonomous ID has been working on prototypes since 2009, with the goal of making a relatively low cost ID system. Gray said they've already run tests on sample bio-soles, which are no thicker than a common foot pad sold in pharmacies, and achieved an accuracy rate of more than 99 percent. He said Carnegie Mellon will broaden the tests to include "a full spectrum of society: big, tall, thin, heavy, athletic, multicultural, on a diet, twins and so on."

Gray wouldn't speculate on what the system will cost or when it might reach the marketplace, but each worker at a site would have his or her own pair of bio-soles.

"Within the third step, it knows it's you, and it goes back to sleep," he said. "If I put on yours, it would know almost instantly that I'm not you."

The idea may seem far-fetched, but scientists have known for centuries that individuals have unique ways of walking, and in recent years the U.S. Department of Defense has been funding millions of dollars of gait research, as has the Chinese government.

The Institute of Intelligent Machines is doing extensive research into gait biometrics, including reports of systems where a floor monitors footsteps without people's knowledge.

One expert who is not connected with the CMU lab said the biometric sole seems promising.

"I must admit I find this news very exciting," said John DiMaggio, an Oregon podiatrist who has worked with law enforcement to use foot information in forensic investigations. While it is too early to fully judge the CMU research plan, DiMaggio said using feet as a biometric identification source makes sense.

While researchers have noted that gait can vary with injuries, fatigue and other factors, Savvides said the bio-soles can detect signs of those things, too.

The bio-soles might also have medical uses. Several papers presented this month at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference in Vancouver suggest changes in how elderly people walk ? such as a slowing pace or variable stride ? can provide early warnings of dementia.

Gray said the technology is less invasive of privacy than eye scans and other biometrics, in part because the individual data stays inside the bio-soles.

But one group that has followed biometrics and privacy issues said there could still be problems.

"Any biometric capture device is a potential tracking device, just like every iPhone is a potential tracking device. That's just the way these things are," said Lee Tien, an attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San Francisco nonprofit that monitors free speech and privacy issues.

Tien said that the bio-soles themselves "might make a person feel a little bit better" than other security systems and that Gray's claim that the system can ID a person within three steps is "pretty impressive."

But he added that if the project is successful, bio-soles could also be implanted in shoes secretly.

"I wouldn't expect Nike to build these in. But it's potentially covert," he said, meaning it could be used to help spy on people.

Improve Your Space With These Simple Home Improvement Tips ...

There are a number of home improvement projects that even novices will find easy. These projects can not only increase the value of a home, but also make it a more pleasant place to live. The following article has some great advice on simple improvement projects that anyone can do.

Make sure the spaces in your home are well-designated prior to placing your home on the market. For example, make certain that your family room has comfortable and inviting furniture, while your office has functional, utilitarian furniture. Buyers can then picture themselves living in the home more easily. By incorporating this technique your home will appear more attractive to buyers, allowing it to sell quickly.

A quick home improvement idea is to lighten up those small, drab rooms in your home. Let the sun shine in! Do some window cleaning so they sparkle, then open your drapes. Natural light will make any room feel bigger. Paint your walls a color that is pale and do not have a cluttered home. You will not feel as stuffy in the room.

Use some wallpaper and varnish to create an interesting kitchen back-splash that is very low cost and easy to do. Purchase wallpaper with the design you want. Measure out the full space of your wall, and purchase a bit more than you actually require. Put paste on the paper and give it a little time to firm up. Hang the paper and smooth bubbles out with a squeegee. Cut the edges so it fits perfectly. After hanging, add the varnish. Admire your thrifty, pretty new back-splash.

Any contractor who offers you a discount for paying in cash is doing something illegal, so don?t get involved with him. Contractors who work with you on a cash-only basis have leverage over you. Without any paperwork binding them to the job, they?re free to take your money and disappear without completing any work.

If you think you might be interested in converting an extra room or the basement into a rental unit, make sure you work out the math first. It is important that renovations pay for themselves quickly in order to be worthwhile. Never exceed your budget.

Plan everything in advance before starting a home improvement project. You should know exactly what you want to do and enumerate any time or budget constraints before construction begins. This will prevent the project from taking too long or costing more than you thought.

Before you try to remove an older popcorn ceiling, test it for asbestos. Asbestos is harmful to your health and needs to be removed by knowledgeable professionals. If asbestos is contained in your ceiling, it may be necessary for you to engage a special company to take down the ceiling.

When your hired contractor offers you advice, there is a good chance it is good advice. You have already done the research you need and you?ve found a good contractor. It is in your best interest to believe what he is telling you. If your contractor tells you that a certain change will not look good, he is most likely speaking from experience. He will know best how to keep you within your budget. You are paying your contractor to be the expert, so pay attention to what he says.

If your home has hard water, try the following. Purchase a water softener and filter your water through it. These softeners can remove both magnesium and calcium deposits that are causing the hard water issues. Depending on the use of your water softener, you can implement water softeners through the use of tablets, smaller systems designed for drinking water or larger and more expensive systems to address general water usage in your home. Find the one that best suits you.

If you can?t stand cleaning gutters or you have many trees around your home, look into a gutter protection system, such as a guard, that you can install over your gutters. With these screens in place, leaves will rarely cause problems and water drainage should not be impeded. Even with these screens, you might have to spend a few minutes getting rid of leaves on the screens, but this is preferable to removing them from the gutter itself.

A good improvement you can make to your home is applying new paint to its exterior. A new paint job says ?fresh? and ?new? like nothing else! To instantly change the look of your home, consider changing the color of the outside of your home.

Vacuum your cabinet interiors when you clean them. That way, you can get rid of loose dirt particles. Clean shelves with a mild soap and water mixture. Start in the top cabinets and work downward. You can also put in fresh shelf liners and fix broken components.

So there you have it?home improvement projects are easy enough for an absolute beginner! Fixing things in your own home can be intimidating, yet rewarding. We hope this article has helped you see home improvement projects in a new light and given you the courage to take them on
