Tell all the Truth | Katherine Cowley

I first encountered what is now one of my favorite Emily Dickinson poems in a class I took on memoir writing. Here?s the short, two-stanza poem:

Tell all the Truth but tell it slant ? Success in Circuit lies Too bright for our infirm Delight The Truth?s superb surprise ? As Lightning to the Children eased With explanation kind The Truth must dazzle gradually Or every man be blind ?

?

I?ve found that ?tell it slant? has been great advice for me as a writer.

In argumentative writing, it means I don?t always come out with my argument from the gate. If you start with your argument (i.e. we need strong gun control) you can sometimes lose all hope of persuading an audience who doesn?t always agree with you. From the start they already know they disagree with you, whereas if you use a?point last structure, you can start on common ground and at least get your audience to listen to you.

In creative writing, to me ?tell it slant? means to focus on craft and character and dialogue, to not be overly didactic with whatever ?truth? I think I know, to let both characters and my readers figure things out on their own, and allow them to learn their own lessons, which may or may not be what I had originally intended.

The book?Tell it Slant?takes its title from Emily Dickinson?s poem, explaining, ?she meant, we think, that truth takes on many guises; that the truth of art can be very different than the truth of day-to-day life? (2). ?The authors go on to quote Salman Rushdie:

Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination and of the heart. (3)

I hope that I can learn to tell the truth in my writing, to speak to the imagination and to the heart.

See Jupiter and Moon shine dazzlingly close together Monday

Stargazers looking up as darkness falls on Monday will notice an eye catching pairing-off between two of the brightest objects in the nighttime sky, weather permitting.?

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. 'The Blob' boosts northern lights

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: "The Blob" from the sun has come and gone, sparking nothing more than beautiful views of the northern lights ? and there could be more blobs to come.

    2. Scientist proposes to girlfriend amid aurora
    3. NASA 'Mohawk Guy' to march in inaugural parade
    4. 'Planetary parks' could protect space wilderness

The moon, appearing as a waxing gibbous phase, 78 percent illuminated, will appear to stand close below a very bright, non-twinkling, silvery "star." But it won't be a star that will be keeping the moon company on America's Inauguration Night, but the largest planet in our solar system: Jupiter.

Across much of the United States and southern Canada, this will be closest that the moon and Jupiter will appear relative to each other until the year 2026. On Monday night, the moon will be about of 248,700 miles (400,500 kilometers) from Earth, while Jupiter will be nearly 1,664 times farther out in space at a distance of 413.8 million miles (665.9 million km).?

During Monday's stargazing event, observers have the chance to see what astronomers call an appulse ? a very close approach of the moon to Jupiter. An appulse is a phenomenon caused by perspective only. There is no close physical approach in space between the two objects involved.? Astronomers insist that appulses have no direct effect on the Earth.?

The moon, moving around the Earth in an easterly direction at roughly its own diameter each hour, will creep slowly toward and ultimately pass just below the giant planet. Jupiter, meanwhile, will be shining about three times brighter than the brightest star, Sirius, offering a commanding sight for stargazers despite its close proximity to the moon.

[ Amazing Stargazing Photos for January ]

Although it will be the moon that will be moving in Jupiter's general direction, the illusion will be that it is Jupiter that is moving, appearing to glide slowly along on a path taking it above the moon. A similar illusion occurs during a lunar eclipsewhen the dark shadow of Earth appears to be slowly creeping across the face of the moon. In reality it is the moon itself slowly creeping into the Earth's shadow.?

After their closest approach Monday, the moon will spend the balance of the night moving slowly away to the left (east), leaving Jupiter behind.??

The table accompanying this guide gives local times of Jupiter's closest approach to the moon's upper edge on the night of Jan. 21 for 20 major cities across the United States and Canada. Separation is given in terms of a fraction of an angular degree. The width of the moon is equal to one-half (0.50) of a degree.?

Examples: From Boston, closest approach between Jupiter and the moon is at 11 p.m. EST. Separation is 0.62 of a degree or one and a quarter times the apparent width of the moon from Jupiter to the moon?s upper edge. From Miami, closest approach is at 11:02 p.m. EST, the separation is listed as 0.33 of a degree or two-thirds of a moon's width separating Jupiter from the moon's upper edge.???

From Halifax, Nova Scotia, an asterisk indicates that the closest approach between Jupiter and the moon comes after midnight on Tuesday.?

And here?s another interesting illusion: For many places in the United States and Canada, Jupiter will be separated from the moon's upper rim by at least a half-degree (0.50) ? equal to the apparent width of the moon. And yet visually to the eye, Jupiter will appear to be much closer; in fact, seemingly impossible that the gap that separates Jupiter from the moon's edge would be large enough to accommodate an object that is equal to the size of the moon itself.?

[ How to Observe the Moon (Infographic) ]

Even from places like Boston, Montreal and Edmonton where the gap exceeds a half degree, Jupiter will appear much closer relative to the moon?s edge. Check it out for yourself.

If you own a small telescope, there are several stargazing opportunities to get a close look at Jupiter during Monday night's appearance.

According to Sky & Telescope magazine, Jupiter's Great Red Spot, a colossal storm bigger than the Earth, can be visible in amateur telescopes from 9 p.m. to 10:40 p.m. EST (6 p.m. to 7:40 p.m. PST/0100 to 0240 GMT). And Jupiter's icy moon Europa will cross in front of the planet, as seen from Earth, between 8:13 p.m. and 10:37 p.m. EST (5:13 p.m. and 7:37 p.m. PST/2213 and 2337 GMT). The best time for amateur astronomers to try and spot Europa's shadow on Jupiter via telescope will be between 10:22 p.m. and 12:46 a.m. EST (7:22 p.m. and 9:46 p.m. PST/0222 and 0546 GMT), the magazine's stargazing experts said.

"You'll also get an opportunity to attempt an unusual feat: spotting Jupiter in the late afternoon, before the Sun sets," said Tony Flanders, associate editor at Sky & Telescope magazine and host of Skyweek on PBS, in a statement. "First locate the moon medium-high in the east; then look a few moon-widths left or lower left of the Moon for Jupiter. It should be easy to spot with binoculars if the air is clear."

Lastly, if you are lucky to be situated across a broad swath of central South America including French Polynesia, Pitcairn and Galapagos Islands an even more spectacular event will take place, when the moon will hide or eclipse Jupiter (called an occultation).

But don't fret if you miss the moon's occultation of Jupiter Monday night. Another one will occur on March 17, according to Sky and Telescope.

Editor's note: If you snap an amazing photo of Jupiter and the moon, or any other night sky view, that you'd like to share for a possible story or image gallery, send photos, comments and your name and location to managing editor Tariq Malik at spacephotos@space.com.

(AP) ? He's tattooed from head to toe, a warrior-like mix of blue, green and red.

He's also running in a surprising third place ahead of this week's Czech presidential elections.

Vladimir Franz, an opera composer and painter, seems the most unlikely of candidates for a prestigious post previously held by beloved playwright-dissident Vaclav Havel and Vaclav Klaus, a professor credited with plotting the economic transition from communism to a free market.

Some have a nickname for Franz: 'Avatar.' And during a televised debate a caller compared him to "an exotic creature from Papua New Guinea."

But he's not short of admirers in a country where voters are increasingly tired of politicians they say are corrupt and failing to deliver on years of promises, more than two decades after the fall of communism.

Franz has no political experience and confesses to little knowledge of economics. He says he only threw his hat in the ring after a group of admirers established the Franz for President initiative and begged him to shake up the race through his shock factor. But he's stirred up such goodwill that a leading economist offered his services for free and his campaign workers are also volunteers.

He's only spent $25,000 from donations on his campaign and hasn't put up any posters.

Franz burst onto the political scene with an eye-catching 88,000 signatures at the end of 2012 ? far more than the 50,000 required by law.

Not affiliated with any party, he has campaigned mostly on a platform highlighting graft, the importance of education and the nation's moral standing.

"The (political) system is so enchanted with itself that it's lost the ability to self-reflect," he said in an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday. Czechs, he says, "are fed up with this crap."

He's proven particularly popular with young voters ? and those not yet eligible to cast a ballot. In a mock presidential election at 441 high schools across the country a month before the vote, Franz won by a landslide, garnering more than 40 percent of some 60,000 votes.

He's tipped to win around 11 percent in the first round on Friday and Saturday ? not enough to make the runoffs. But he may end up kingmaker as the leading candidates ? former prime ministers Jan Fischer and Milos Zeman ? would be eager to pick up his following if the vote goes to a second round.

Karel Strachota, who organized the school ballot, said young people no longer identify with existing parties.

Franz is seen as "a candidate who is not tainted by politics," Strachota said. "They look with sympathy at his nonconformity and the way he presents himself."

And, perhaps surprisingly, few take issue with his tattoos.

"Personally, I wouldn't vote for him ? but (the tattoos) are not a problem at all," said Tomas Pistora, a 33-year-old IT specialist from Prague. "The young people prefer him because they don't have a better choice."

Many Czechs, especially in the capital, simply aren't shocked with Franz's look because the face of the 53-year-old professor at Prague's Academy of Performing Arts has been around for years.

"The tattoo doesn't make any difference," said Jakub Fisera, a student in Prague, adding a lack of experience in politics was more an issue.

Franz calls his tattoos body art. His face is a riot of green and red swirls against a background of blue. On his hands is a portrait of Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu, on his chest the crucified Christ.

"A tattoo is a sign of a free will and that does not harm the freedom of anyone else," he says.

For the first time, the Czech president will be elected in a popular vote ? a new system that makes it possible for independent candidates like Franz to run for the largely ceremonial post.

Vaclav Klaus, the incumbent, opposed the change. He called it "a fatal mistake" and said he feared the likes of Franz might succeed him.

A total of nine candidates are running. Unlike the Euro-skeptic Klaus who attacked the EU at every opportunity, the favorites, Zeman and Fischer, have a more moderate approach to the bloc which the country joined in 2004.

Zeman, the leftist premier in 1998-02, leads the polls with about 25 percent support. Fischer, a centrist and a former state bureaucrat, gained significant popularity when he led a caretaker government in 2009-10. He polls at about 20 percent.

As the campaign approached its end on Tuesday, eight candidates were busy on the stump. The ninth ? Franz ? had other matters to deal with: a final rehearsal of his opera "War with the Newts" at the State Opera.

Torn between art and politics, Franz cut short his appearance at an election debate to return to the opera house that is part of Prague's National Theater.

But he committed to staying to the end of Thursday's final televised debate. It wasn't an easy choice, but he realized his credibility demanded that he take part.

"For a Czech composer to have a world premiere in the National Theater is something extraordinary. I had to make a choice between a service to the public and the fulfillment of my life-long dream. I've made the choice and will be at the debate."

Well, That's Insulting: This Technology Wants You to Read Less

Time was "tl;dr" was the battle cry of lazy internet jackasses, people with no attention span who nevertheless found the energy and wherewithal to complain about the length of any digital piece of writing that dared to be longer than a few sentences. Today, at CES, tl;dr is an irritating new "innovation." More »

iON reveals Adventure and Air Pro 2 sports cameras, we go hands on

iON reveals Adventure and Air Pro 2 sports cameras, we go hands on

You may remember iON stepping out onto the action camera market back in spring, when we went hands on with the OG Air Pro. Fast forward to CES, and it's back with a brace of new cameras to capture your every move. First up is the iON Adventure, a 1080p GPS-enabled helmet cam with a twist, almost literally. The device has the same tubular format as the original, but the lens is actually on one of the longer sides, rather than at the end of the barrel, making it more suitable for chest mounting. The Adventure also has two memory card slots, meaning you can pack in a whole lot more footage, battery willing. For those extended shoots, a new loop recording mode allows continuous, non-stop recording between the two cards -- no more swapping out your micro-SD on the move. Other features include a vibrate-to-record function (it starts and stops recording when it detects movement) and a partnership with map / video sharing service Kinomap. The device has a sleek, gloss back finish, weighs just 4.2 ounces, and has a large, easily accessible record button on one end. While we only spent a short time with the camera, the quality of the build felt good, and the demo footage looked impressive. The Adventure will be available starting in March for $349.

The second new family member is the Air Pro 2. As you might have guessed, this is the second iteration of the original we saw back in March. Much of the external design remains the same, with the distinct octagonal accents at either end of the barrel. The main difference being the image sensor upgrade, which can now shoot at 14 megapixels, with 60fps for video and a 180-degree mode for those extra wide shots. Last time we liked the Air Pro, but we'll be especially keen to see how the follow up performs. With more and more cameras launching into the market, differentiating can be difficult, something apparently not lost on iON, who has clearly tried hard to introduce new and distinct features. The Air Pro 2 also becomes available in March, with two versions -- one with WiFi, one without. The wireless enabled one will cost you $299, or $249 if you don't need the extra functionality.

Polaroid Has A Clever Retail Concept That Could ... - Business Insider

Polaroid has been left behind,?but it has a new idea that may help it regain some of its luster.

In a partnership with startup Fotobar, Polaroid plans to open a chain of retail locations.?

What will they be selling?

Customers will select pictures that they've taken with their phones, wirelessly transmit them to workstations, and edit them with filters.

"Once the images are uploaded, customers will be able to choose from a wide variety of materials, substrates and framing options for their individual works of art ? all of which are handcrafted and shipped worldwide to the consumer in just a few days," Polaroid explained in its press release.?"Images can be framed, matted, and/or printed directly onto a variety of unique substrates including canvas, metal, acrylic, wood and bamboo."

The first store will open in February in Florida. Polaroid plans to have a total of 10 locations nationwide by the end of 2013. Fotobar CEO Warren Struhl told Fast Company that he envisions "thousands" of these stores worldwide.

Will Oremus at Slate praised the concept, writing that it's "so simple and natural that it just might work."

"Having lost its way in a high-tech world, Polaroid is going back to 'high touch,'" wrote Oremus.?"If it succeeds, the company will have pulled off a feat that few foresaw: returning to relevance in the age of Instagram."

It's about the experience. For instance, the first store will have a room called "The Studio," which will serve as a hosting room for photo classes and private parties, while doubling as a studio for portraits.?The idea is to make the stores recreation destinations, rather than a simple photo shop.

Still, in the end, Polaroid and Fotobar are trying to capitalize on one thing: a desire for tangibility.

That's a divergence from Polaroid's old brand ? it was always about immediacy. It's one of the many photography trends that led to the brand's downfall. After all, now anyone can get their digital pictures uploaded and share them instantly.

This concept will help Polaroid market itself as a boutique photography brand ? not a symbol of an outdated method for instant gratification that was passed by long ago.

If it turns out that enough people still want a sort of permanence to their photos, this is a smart way to fill that hole, and it could make Polaroid relevant again.

Is internet marketing right for you?

As the title above suggests?you may be a veteran internet marketer, or you may be a newbie. Especially if you?re a newbie though, you need to stop and think about something. Are you wasting your time choosing a profession that?s wrong for you?

If you?re just starting out in internet marketing, chances are you?re REALLY excited about it..which is definitely good. You should be excited, by all means. But you may find that you?re not getting the results you want, or you may not be getting any results at all.

You may find yourself fumbling around, not really making any money, or getting any traffic, or just growing your business at all. Which is perfectly normal..because internet marketing can take a long time to work for you, unless you do everything right from the get go.

Which most people don?t. If you just started out with your online business, and you?re struggling, don?t fear. You?re not alone! It may feel like you?re alone at times. You may get frustrated, overwhelmed and just feel like you want to give up.

What it takes to succeed in internet marketing

There are a few things it takes to succeed in internet marketing. I?m one of those ?mindset? guys you always hear about. In other words, I?m a firm believer that it takes the ?winning mindset? to succeed in internet marketing.

It?s not just me who believes that, the fact is, it?s TRUE?you do need the winning mindset. What?s the winning mindset? It?s basically the state of mind, and the belief, that YES, you will make money online..and you won?t let anything stop you.

To have the winning mindset, you have to think big, and visualize your dreams becoming a reality. Once you have your goals and visions in place for what you want, you have to FOCUS on that dream and keep the image of success in your mind at all times.

You don?t have to be perfect, but you need to stay positive and tell yourself you?re a winner.

Make a choice

Do you have what it takes to succeed in online marketing? Now is the time for you to make a choice. Do you want to give up like most people? Or do you want to press on in the face of adversity and give it your all?

With the right drive and determination, anyone can truly succeed at making money online. You just have to believe in yourself and keep going no matter what. Good luck.

Family Tree Maker 2012 Sync problems - Message Boards ...

Agreed, entirely! In relative terms I'm a "geek" but don't see why anyone should have to spend hours working out the ways a prog works. FTM is a database, and databases don't behave like most of the applications most people tend to come across in ordinary computer use (word-processors, spreadsheets, email clients, etc). The user-interface (layout on screen) differs a great deal, for starters - with good reason, but a more familiar presentation with more friendly commands, options, settings etc would undoubtedly help.

So would much less obscure error messages. "An error occurred" (which I frequently get with certain reports) is pretty useless! I happen to know why this happens (some relationships have been screwed up during syncing, resulting in people allegedly having several optional parents!) but there is no way I can get a list of them out of the program; it should obviously be presented when that particular problem shows up, and ditto for others.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. job market proved resilient in December despite fears that a budget impasse in Washington would send the economy over the fiscal cliff and trigger growth-killing tax hikes and spending cuts.

Employers added 155,000 jobs last month, roughly matching the solid but unspectacular monthly pace of the past two years.

The gains announced Friday weren't enough to reduce unemployment, which remained a still-high 7.8 percent. The November rate was revised up a notch from the 7.7 percent the government had originally reported.

The stable pace of December hiring suggested that many employers tuned out the fracas in the nation's capital. The threat wasn't averted until a deal won final passage on New Year's Day.

Rather than hold back until the fiscal cliff was resolved, many employers kept hiring, most likely in anticipation of higher customer demand.

"What would hiring have been if we had not been facing the fiscal cliff in December?" said Robert Kavcic, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets. "We might have seen quite a bit stronger job growth" ? something closer to 200,000 a month.

That's an encouraging sign for the job market, because an even bigger budget showdown is looming: Congress must vote to raise the government's $16.4 trillion borrowing limit by late February. If not, the government risks defaulting on its debt. Republicans will likely demand deep spending cuts as the price of raising the debt limit.

Robust hiring in construction and manufacturing drove last month's job increases. Construction firms added 30,000 jobs, the most in 15 months. In part, that increase likely reflected hiring needed to rebuild from Superstorm Sandy. And the housing market's gradual recovery has energized homebuilding. Manufacturers added 25,000 jobs, the most in nine months.

Economists found other hopeful news in the report. Americans were given more work hours in December ? an average 34.5 hours a week in December, up from 34.4 in November. And their pay outgrew inflation. Hourly wages rose 7 cents to $23.73 last month, a 2.1 percent increase compared with a year earlier. Over the same period, inflation rose 1.8 percent.

"Perhaps (the) underlying economic performance is accelerating, and even Washington can't screw it up," said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG.

One company that hired last year and would like to add more jobs in 2013 is Arteriocyte, a Cleveland-based stem-cell therapy and medical device company. But CEO Don Brown is concerned about potential cuts in government spending, which he says could erode Arteriocyte's revenue.

One such cut is a 2 percent reduction in the reimbursements Medicare gives doctors and hospitals. That reduction was delayed by the budget deal reached this week. If the reimbursement cut is imposed later this year, it would lower revenue for the hospitals and surgeons that buy Arteriocyte's advanced products.

"Our entire customer base is unsure about what their reimbursement landscape is going to be," Brown said.

The Obama administration's health care reform law also imposed a 2.2 percent sales tax on medical devices. Brown estimates that will cost his company $400,000. He had hoped the tax would be eliminated as part of a fiscal cliff agreement.

Arteriocyte hired 10 workers last year and now employs 76. The new hires included research scientists, two marketing specialists and a sales representative. Brown hopes to make five to 10 additional hires this year, but he might be unable to do so if the Medicare cut takes effect.

Despite last month's hiring gains, Friday's report pointed to some weakness in the job market. For example, the number of unemployed actually rose 164,000 to 12.2 million. About 192,000 people entered the work force last month, but most did not find jobs.

The unemployment numbers come from a government survey of households. The number of jobs added comes from a separate survey of businesses.

A broader category that includes not only the unemployed but also part-time workers who want full-time jobs and people who have given up looking for work was unchanged in December at 22.7 million.

The government revised up its estimates of job growth for October and November by 14,000 jobs. October's job increases were revised down from 138,000 to 137,000 but November's were revised up from 146,000 to 161,000.

Economists said the pace of hiring almost certainly isn't strong enough to lead the Federal Reserve to cut short its bond-buying program. The Fed is spending $85 billion a month on bond purchases to try to drive down long-term borrowing costs and stimulate economic growth.

The job market is being held back by government cutbacks. Governments at all levels cut 13,000 jobs in December. Since the Great Recession ended in mid-2009, governments have eliminated 645,000 jobs ? an average of nearly 15,400 a month.

By contrast, during the recoveries from the recessions of 1990-1991 and 2001, governments added an average of more than 15,000 jobs a month. If governments were hiring at that pace instead of slashing payrolls, the U.S economy would be generating more than 180,000 jobs a month.

Instead, for two full years, monthly job growth has remained stuck at a tepid pace: It averaged 153,000 in both 2011 and 2012. That isn't enough to lower unemployment to what economists regard as a "normal" rate of 6 percent or less. The Federal Reserve doesn't expect unemployment to drop that low until after 2015.

The economy has replaced just 4.8 million, or 54 percent, of the 8.8 million jobs lost between January 2008, when the job market peaked, and February 2010, when it bottomed during the recession. It has been, by far, the weakest jobs recovery since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

"A status quo report in today's labor market represents an ongoing jobs crisis," says Heidi Shierholz, an economist at the liberal Economic Policy Institute.

Still, the economy has been showing broad improvement. Layoffs are down. Banks are lending a bit more freely. Companies have built up a near-record $1.7 trillion in cash. Consumers have cut their debts to pre-recession levels. Europe has avoided a financial catastrophe.

The once-depressed housing market is rebounding. A gauge of U.S. service firms' business activity expanded in December by the most in nearly a year. Manufacturing is benefiting from the best auto sales in five years. And Americans spent more at the end of the crucial holiday shopping season.

"There is little doubt that the seeds of faster growth are being planted," James Marple, an economist at TD Bank, said in a note to clients.

That said, most economists expect slight improvement at best in hiring this year. A 2 percentage point cut in the Social Security tax expired Jan. 1. That means a household with income of about $50,000 will have about $1,000 less to spend. A household with two high-paid workers will have up to $4,500 less.

And the government may impose spending cuts this year.

Higher taxes and less government spending, along with uncertainty about future budget fights, could restrain growth and hiring.

That "likely means acceleration in the labor market will remain elusive for the time being," said Ellen Zentner, an economist at Nomura Securities.

U.K. Telecoms Watchdog Wants Consumers To Be Able To Exit Contracts Without Paying A Penalty If Prices Go Up Mid-Term

on phoneU.K. telecoms regulator Ofcom is proposing to change the rules on fixed contracts for mobile, landline and broadband services to prevent providers forcing price hikes on existing customers. Ofcom's current rules are open to interpretation -- since comms providers only have to allow consumers to exit a contract without penalty when a contractual term change is likely to be of 'material detriment'.

PowerVR Series 6 mobile GPUs are almost here, we go handson with a test chip video

Imagination Technologies is on a high right now. Throughout 2012, the company's PowerVR graphics processors continued to monopolize the iPhone and iPad as well as appearing in (late 2011) Android flagships, the PlayStation Vita and even the first Clover Trail-powered Windows 8 tablets. But you know what? That's old news, because all those devices run current-gen PowerVR Series5 silicon. Most new top-end devices in 2013 and 2014 will either contain the latest Mali GPUs from rival ARM, or they'll pack PowerVR Series6, aka Rogue. This latter chip is currently being developed by at least eight different smartphone and tablet manufacturers and is expected to make a good bit of noise at CES next week.

But who's going to wait that long if they don't absolutely have to? To get a fuller understanding of what awaits us in the coming weeks and months, we scoped out a Rogue test chip at Imagination's sparkly new HQ just outside of London, UK. The test silicon doesn't represent the true power of Series6 because it's running on an FPGA board that severely limits its bandwidth, but it's still able to show off one crucial advantage: namely the ability to run OpenGL ES 3.0 games and apps. This API is all about improving mobile graphics through making smarter use of GPU compute, without annoying the battery, and the three exclusive demos after the break show just how it pulls that off.

Chicago's next prosecutor to be more of an insider

CHICAGO (AP) ? The lanky, soft-spoken lawman from New York arrived in Chicago with a mandate to clean up corruption-plagued Illinois. And after a decade on the job, Patrick Fitzgerald had helped put two successive governors and a long procession of other public officials behind bars.

Months after the consummate outsider resigned as head of the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago to enter private practice, the White House is expected to name Fitzgerald's replacement soon from among four finalists ? all of whom are comparative Chicago insiders.

Whoever is picked, the next U.S. attorney will step in to what is widely regarded as Chicago's second-most powerful job, next only to the mayor. The chief prosecutor and around 170 assistant attorneys also have an impact beyond Chicago and Illinois, including by handling major terrorism cases.

"The fantastic thing about Fitzgerald was that he maintained his independence," said Kathleen Zellner, a Chicago-based defense attorney. "I'm not saying these candidates won't be independent, but it's hard to decide to prosecute when you have (such close) connections to a town."

The list of four finalists ? Lori Lightfoot, Zachary Fardon, Jonathan Bunge and Gil Soffer ? was recently forwarded to the Obama administration by Illinois' two U.S. senators, who set-up a screening committee to vet a longer list of prospective candidates over several months.

All four know their way around the federal prosecutor's office in Chicago ? one of the nation's busiest ? each having worked there as assistant attorneys at some point. Fardon, for instance, was a member of Fitzgerald's trial team that convicted former Illinois Gov. George Ryan on corruption charges in 2006.

If Lightfoot is named, she would make history as the first African-American and first woman to head the office.

But what stands out about the four, as a group, is that none could be described as an outsider. All four, who are little known outside legal circles, are currently partners in big-name law offices in Chicago. All have spent at least several years of their legal careers in the city.

At the time of his surprise pick in 2001, Fitzgerald was co-chief of the organized crime and terrorism unit for the U.S. attorney's office in the Southern District of New York. The thinking was that he'd be more willing to go after Illinois politicians because he had no ties to them.

It seemed to work, Zellner said. Ryan, a Republican, and former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, a Democrat, are both in prison on corruption convictions after investigations spearheaded by Fitzgerald. He helped send dozens of other city and state officials to prison.

Appointing someone with Chicago ties may convey confidence that Chicago is no longer as corrupt as it was, said Gal Pissetzky, another Chicago attorney. He said it could signal a desire to shift focus away from corruption and on to other persistent Chicago crime, such as drug trafficking or gang-related murders.

"If you want to tackle these issues, it might make sense to have someone from Chicago," he said. "They know the inner workings of Chicago. And law enforcement will be more cooperative when you bring someone from the inside, from Chicago."

The finalists haven't spoken publicly about their candidacy, or about whether they would change in office priorities.

In a letter to the U.S. senators describing interviews with the four, however, the co-chairs of the screen committee wrote that, "All share the belief ? though with slightly differing ordering ? that the primary subject matter concerns of the office should be: 1. Violence and drugs; 2. Public corruption; 3. Financial crimes, and 4. Terrorism."

Lightfoot seems to have especially strong connections to city government, heading the Chicago police Office of Professional Standards between 2002 and 2005. Other candidates have also held administrative posts, including Fardon when he served as the No. 2 in the U.S. attorney's office in Nashville.

"What you see is that this seems to be a selection of people who are more administrators," said Zellner. "It is almost a retreat from a Pat Fitzgerald-type of prosecutor."

That, she added, didn't mean any one of the candidates wouldn't excel.

"You don't get nominated without having really good credentials," she said. "But it is difficult to know what philosophy someone will have until after a year or so. That transition will take time."

Federal investigations can take years before they result in indictments or go to trial, so any shift in direction under new leadership is likely to be incremental and happen over years.

A change in style is more likely, said Pissetzky.

As he racked up flashy convictions ? including of reputed mobsters and terrorists ? Fitzgerald gained a reputation as a no-nonsense prosecutor who erred on the side of secrecy and typically eschewed banter with reporters. He could be tenacious to a fault, defense attorneys said. Over the years, many complained that Fitzgerald pursued their clients with too much fervor, loading indictments up with as many charges as he could muster.

It's a style that his successor won't necessarily emulate.

Said Pissetzky, "I think they will try to make their own mark rather than trying to follow in his footsteps."
