Snow church opens in Bavaria (AP)

MITTERFIRMIANSREUT, Germany ? A church built entirely of ice and snow has opened in Bavaria ? a century after villagers first built a snow church in an act of protest.

The church at Mitterfirmiansreut, near the Czech border, is more than 20 meters (65 feet) in length and boasts a tower. It's made up of some 1,400 cubic meters (49,000 cubic feet) of snow.

The structure was bathed in blue light as it opened Wednesday evening with a blessing from Dean Kajetan Steinbeisser.

But when the ancestors of today's villagers built the first snow church in 1911, they weren't thinking just of architectural achievement.

Steinbeisser says: "It was meant as an act of provocation ? believers from the village got together and built a snow church because they didn't have a church here."

The One Reason the iPad Can't Lose [Ipad]

In the 1890s, King Camp Gillette had what was then novel business idea: sell durable razor handles cheaply to lock in lifelong customers of disposable blades. By trading short-term loss for long-term, reliable profits, his company became wildly successful, and—more importantly—created a foothold that its competitors spent decades trying to overcome. (AP) ? A NATO service member died Friday in a roadside bombing in southern Afghanistan, while allied and Afghan forces killed three senior Taliban figures and captured 11 fighters and sympathizers, the alliance said.

Also Friday, a roadside bomb killed four civilians and wounded one in the Tirin Kot district of Uruzgan province, some 250 miles (400 kilometers) southwest of Kabul, the Interior Ministry said.

The continuing bloodshed comes despite tentative efforts by the Obama administration and other governments to establish a peace process with the Taliban in order to help end the 10-year war. A senior administration official has told The Associated Press that Washington plans to continue a series of secret meetings with Taliban representatives in Europe and the Persian Gulf region next year.

President Hamid Karzai said this week that his government would accept the Taliban opening a liaison office in Turkey, the Gulf state of Qatar or Saudi Arabia for the purpose of holding peace talks.

A NATO statement said an operation earlier this week in Bakwah district in Farah province resulted in the killing of a senior Taliban leader and two of his commanders, as well as a "number of additional insurgents."

Early on Friday, NATO and Afghan troops captured 11 Taliban fighters or sympathizers who provided logistical support and weapons to insurgents in five separate operations across the country, it said.

Nighttime kill-and-capture raids, in which a number of civilians have died, have become a flashpoint for anger over foreign meddling in Afghanistan. Karzai has demanded that foreign troops stop breaking into homes.

Friday's death brings the December toll for NATO troops killed in Afghanistan to 26, while the year's toll so far is 542. The yearly total is considerably lower than for 2010, when more than 700 troops died. But the numbers of wounded have remained consistently high, dipping only slightly from last year's total of more than 5,000 service members.

This year marked the high point of the international military presence in Afghanistan with more than 140,000 troops on the ground. Those numbers have started shrinking in recent weeks and are due to fall to less than 100,000 by the end of next year, as the U.S.-led NATO force prepares to end its combat role in 2014.

Faced with an overwhelming superiority in numbers and firepower by the allied and Afghan government forces, the Taliban have largely avoided direct combat. Instead, they have relied mainly on roadside bombs and small ambushes to harass and inflict losses on the security forces.

Meanwhile, a NATO helicopter made an emergency landing Friday in northern Afghanistan, after having mechanical problems. A statement said there was no evidence of enemy ground fire. The crew was unharmed and the chopper was brought back to a coalition base without incident.

The coalition relies heavily on helicopters to avoid using roads that are frequently mined by the insurgents.

The Taliban have few dedicated anti-air weapons, but they have destroyed or damaged dozens of aircraft using automatic rifles and other infantry weapons. In August, the guerrillas shot down a U.S. Chinook transport, killing 30 U.S. special operation troops, a translator and seven Afghan commandos.

India issues cyclone warning along southeast coast

(AP)? NEW DELHI ? India's weather office has warned residents along parts of the country's southeastern coast that Cyclone Thane is likely to cause heavy rains and gale-force winds.

The India Meteorological Department said Friday morning that Thane is centered in the Indian Ocean, 22 miles (35 kilometers) southwest of the town of Pondicherry, also known as Pudducherry.

The weather office said it was likely the storm would weaken and move westwards.

It warns of heavy rains and winds of speeds reaching 70 miles (110 kilometers) an hour until noon Friday before slowing down.

The seas are expected to be very rough along the coast of Pondicherry and its neighboring areas of southern Andhra Pradesh and the northern coast of Tamil Nadu. Fishermen have been warned not to venture out.

Summit purchase won't happen until 2012 (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Summit Entertainment is likely to remain its own company for the rest of the year.

The studio, which had hoped to merge with another company before 2012, has not come to an agreement with potential purchaser, the Los Angeles Times is reporting.

According to the Times, Summit had hoped to close a purchase deal before the end of the year in order to take advantage of tax and other financial incentives. But with two days left in the year, that's not going to happen.

Summit is in talks with Lionsgate Entertainment and with Miramax co-owner Colony Capital.

Summit is an attractive acquisition. Its "Twilight" series is extremely profitable and has one more installment to go before it ends.

The Times reports that Lionsgate and Colony each are offering in the neighborhood of $375 million -- plus assumption of about $200 million of debt -- for Summit.

A Summit spokesman was not immediately available for comment Thursday.

Screen queen, golf kings get royal honors (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? After playing the mother of Queen Elizabeth in "The King's Speech," actress Helena Bonham Carter will take part in a real-life royal performance when she receives an honor from the monarch herself.

The actress is among close to 1,000 people from all walks of life whose achievements are recognized in the annual New Year's Honors List.

Northern Irish golfers Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke, who won the U.S. and British opens this year, are also on the list, capping an outstanding year for UK golf.

Most of the people honored with knighthoods or a variety of slightly lesser traditional titles such as Commander, Officer or Member of the Order of the British Empire (CBE, OBE and MBE), are unknown to the public.

Among them is former teenage drug dealer and gang member Chris Preddie, now 24, who renounced crime after his brother was shot dead and now campaigns against knife and gun crime among black youths in London.

Preddie is related to two brothers who murdered a 10-year-old boy in 2000, a crime that shocked Britain. The victim's father told British media he objected to Preddie being honored with an OBE.

TV producer Peter Bazalgette, credited with popularising the "Big Brother" reality show format across the globe, will receive a knighthood - becoming Sir Peter - which may please legions of Big Brother fans but dismay critics who say the show is vulgar.

PALACE POMP

Novelist Penelope Lively, a past winner of the prestigious Booker Prize for her 1987 novel Moon Tiger, is also on the list. She becomes a "Dame," the female equivalent of a knighthood.

A rung down from a Dame with her CBE award, Bonham Carter received one of her two Oscar nominations for portraying Queen Elizabeth's mother in Oscar-winning film The King's Speech.

She will experience true royal pomp when she receives her award at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace next year, but she is no stranger to nobility, coming from an aristocratic family. Her great-grandfather, the Earl of Oxford and Asquith, served as prime minister under Elizabeth's grandfather, King George V.

Also honored at a high point in a long career is golfer Clarke, who won the last British Open at the age of 42, on his 20th attempt. He will receive an OBE, one step down from CBE.

It was a particularly emotional win for Clarke, who has gone through hard times since losing his wife to cancer in 2006. He was the oldest winner of the Open since 1967 and the first home champion in 12 years.

McIlroy will have an MBE to show for his efforts during a rollercoaster year that saw him throw away victory at the U.S. Masters in April only to bounce back by clinching his first major at the U.S. Open in June.

At 22, McIlroy was the youngest winner of the championship since 1923.

Queen Elizabeth, whose sporting interests lie more in the world of horse-racing than of golf, does not draw up the Honors' List herself. Government officials seek out worthy recipients, who can also be nominated by members of the public.

Johnson says he's leaving GOP for Libertarians (AP)

SANTA FE, N.M. ? Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, a longshot candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, said Wednesday he is leaving the GOP in favor of running as a Libertarian.

Johnson told a news conference at the state Capitol that the decision was difficult, but that he was "deeply disappointed" by the treatment he received in the Republican nomination process.

"I had hoped to lay out a real libertarian message on all the issues in the Republican contest. The process was not fair and open," he said.

Johnson has been excluded from all but two GOP presidential debates. He also has barely registered in the polls.

The former two-term governor said that if he earns the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination, he will appear on the ballots in all 50 states and will not be "held hostage to a system rigged for the wealthiest and best-known candidates in a handful of states who happen to have early primaries."

Johnson is fiscally conservative but supports legalizing marijuana and abortion rights.

He laid out an agenda that also includes ending deficit spending and cutting federal spending by 43 percent. He called for ending gun control, ending expensive foreign wars, cutting over-regulation and legalizing gay marriage.

"I believe this election needs a true libertarian voice," he said. "While Ron Paul is a good man and a libertarian who I proudly endorsed for president in 2008, there is no guarantee that he will be the Republican nominee."

Review: 'Sims 3 Pets' Is No Dog (3DS)

During my time with EA's latest foray into virtual people management, I realized that a handheld game was actually the optimal experience for The Sims: with its more limited scope than its console and PC counterparts, you're able to set your own level of investment, whether that involves lots of furious management of your imaginary pet and/or their owner, or a more casual style of play where you simply let them do their thing with minor nudges here and there.

So the platform is a match for the material. But does that mean it's any good?

THE BASICS

It's a bite-sized Sims experience on your 3DS, meaning you'll be creating and customizing a person and/or pet, putting them to work, making new friends, and building that extension on your home that you always wanted. At its core, this is the same game we've been playing for the better part of a decade with stereoscopic visuals and the ability to manage furry friends.

THE HIGHS

Getting the feel of the series down

If there's one thing The Sims Studio can be congratulated on, it's finding a nice balance between the expansive, sometimes busy experience of the PC and console versions of the game without sacrificing too many of the options available to you. Your initial view is limited to your home and the block it's on as other Sims and pets wander on and off your property. You're able to fast-travel to other locations in town and interact with the other Sims there, giving the overall world a feeling of being broken up but never exactly walled off.

They make great pets

While the pet selection has been limited to cats and dogs (down from horses in the other versions of the game), it's never really to the game's detriment and you'll have plenty to do in terms of customizing and assigning behaviors to your new pet(s). Some of the most compulsively enjoyable time I spent with the game was when I had my shiba inu pup burrowing in the yard for treasure or having him befriend/menace the neighbor folk. The game exists in a nice place between the very specific focus of something like Nintendogs and the sometimes random oddness of The Sims.

THE LOWS

A lot of systems management

First you have to switch between the Sims in your household. Then you have to toggle between the several menus to identify and mess around with the Karma Powers, but of yeah, did you remember to toggle the game speed back to normal time because it looks like it's night time and your Sim needs to sleep. But it's three in the morning, why do other Sims keep coming to your house? And on it goes until you feel like you might need to put The Sims 3 down for a minute to take a breather.

I'd hesitate to describe the systems here as daunting, but there are a lot of them and there is something of a learning curve to the whole thing that might be off-putting at first.

Functional but inessential 3D

AKA the "post-conversion effect." You know, like the big summer blockbuster films that that, five months from release get a 3D conversion, as soon as you sit down with them it's evident that this wasn't exactly intended to be a three dimensional experience. The Sims 3 Pets likewise doesn't really take advantage of the 3D in any particularly interesting way in terms of creating a sense of depth for the game's world. This series has never really been about visual flash, however, so you're probably not coming to this portable incarnation looking for any kind of 3D graphic innovation.

Worrying about doggie death

That is, if you don't have the cold, steel heart of a robot. For the rest of us, when those meters start getting low for our virtual pet and he's hungry/dirty/has to pee and we still haven't quite figured out yet how to get him through the actions that will keep him/her in existence... well, it gets a little hairy there as you worry you might be seeing a tiny little pet tombstone.

THE VERDICT

While The Sims 3 Pets represents a streamlining and in some ways, narrowing of the EA's virtual pet and person experience, there's still a decent amount of depth?to both the benefit and the detriment of the game. The actual gamification of The Sims experience is welcome here but you'll have to be prepared for something of a learning curve as you'll have to struggle against an unexpectedly complex series of menus which present the only real obstacle to enjoying the game.

The Sims 3 Pets is available now for the 3DS.

Hawaii Parade Honors Japanese-American WWII Vets

Hundreds of Japanese-American veterans of World War II were honored Saturday with a parade in Honolulu - nearly 70 years after they volunteered to fight for their country even as the government branded them "enemy aliens." About 200 veterans rode in convertibles, troop carriers and trolleys past a cheering crowd of tourists, family and local residents. The event celebrates the Congressional Gold Medal the veterans received last month. Fragile health prevented many of the surviving veterans - the youngest of whom are in their 80s - from traveling to Washington, D.C., to attend a ceremony at which the medal was presented. So their supporters decided to hold a celebration for them in Hawaii, where two-thirds of the veterans were from. The medal recognizes the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the 100th Infantry Battalion which together saw some of the most brutal fighting in the war as the soldiers pushed their way through Italy, France and Germany. By the end of the war, the combined unit became the most highly decorated military unit in U.S. history for its size and length of service. Masato Doi, 90, said he was surprised and a little overwhelmed by the celebration. "It really is an honor," Doi said at a luncheon where the veterans received a replica of medal. Doi, who was a member of the 442nd, said he was proud that his service led to greater tolerance and acceptance of Japanese-Americans among the general public. Veterans Secretary Eric Shinseki, a 69-year-old former Army chief of staff and a Japanese-American, told them their service enabled him to grow up without having people doubt his loyalty. "Except for your service and bloody sacrifice, my life's work would not have followed the path that it did. And so to you and your family members - we are indebted to all of you for giving us lessons about living our lives with purpose and dignity," he said. "From my generation to yours - I thank you." Thousands of Japanese-Americans served in World War II even as the government viewed them with suspicion because their ancestors were from the country that bombed Pearl Harbor. Some on the mainland enlisted from internment camps, where the federal government had imprisoned 110,000 Japanese-Americans. Those in the parade Saturday wore hats with the names of their units on them, and some included the saying "Go for Broke," which had been the motto of the 442nd Regimental Combat team. The medal also honors Japanese-Americans who served as translators and interpreters against Japan, often on the front lines with Marines and soldiers fighting from island to island across the Pacific. As members of the Military Intelligence Service, they deciphered key Japanese communications, including one that tipped off the U.S. to the flight plans of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto - the architect of the attack on Pearl Harbor - in 1943. The U.S. shot down his plane, dealing a major blow to Japan. The parade also honored members of the 1399th Engineer Construction Battalion who were stationed on Oahu during the war. The elite medal has been given selectively since 1776, when George Washington was awarded the first. Other honorees include the Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison, Rosa Parks and the Dalai Lama. The Tuskegee Airmen, the first group of black fighter pilots, received the medal in 2007.

Test poised for tight finish as India, Australia share honours on day three

The Boxing Day Test is poised for a razor edge finish after Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey today salvaged an Australian innings that was on the brink of collapse and led their team's fight back against India on day three.

December 28, 2011 - Melbourne

The Boxing Day Test is poised for a razor edge finish after Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey today salvaged an Australian innings that was on the brink of collapse and led their team's fight back against India on day three.

On an extraordinary, 15 wickets fell for 247 runs with India first collapsing as swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus validated his return to the team with career best figures of 5/75, then the Australians followed with a collapse of their own before Ponting and Hussey combined to help return the match to even terms.

Australia has so far made 8/179, having an overall lead of 230 runs, The Age reports.

Hilfenhaus' call back to the Australian Test team was complete when he skittled the Indian batting and helped deliver Australia a vital 51 run first innings lead.

But that was only the first act in an absorbing day's play. Within moments of the Australians confidently beginning its second innings they were once more in peril, sinking to 4/27.

In the event Ponting and Hussey held together for a pugnacious 115 run partnership to ensure that Australia would not be swept aside and would remain fiercely in this test match.

Hack your Facebook Chat, see your friends

Double-bracketing a user's name will make their picture pop up in Facebook chat.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Facebook chat gimmick lets you insert faces of friends, others
  • A pair of double brackets around a profile ID name or number makes it happen

((Mashable)) -- Be honest: has Facebook chat ever been your favorite form of instant messaging?

For many of us, Gchat, Skype or even AIM are our preferred defaults.

Now, a new gimmick is making us like Facebook's built-in chat function a whole lot more. As demonstrated in the photo above, you can make the profile pictures of Facebook users and pages show up inside your chat windows.

Here's how:

1. Start chatting with someone (pretty simple).

2. When you'd like to refer to a mutual friend or, say, Coca Cola, you dump their profile id (either their name or a string of numbers for those users who haven't claimed their choice URL) into double brackets. So, that would be [[cocacola]] for a picture of Coke, [[zuck]] for Mark Zuckerberg and [[mashable]] for the logo of where your learned about this new feature, and so on.

3. Amaze everyone on Facebook chat with this cool new gimmick.

What do you think, will inserting your friend's faces bring the end of the emoticon era, or will the Internet forever be dominated by the : ) face?

Mexican army: Ally's arrest is blow to 'El Chapo' (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican authorities said Monday that they had dealt a blow to the country's most powerful drug cartel with the capture of a top lieutenant ? but didn't say if they were any closer to capturing the gang's elusive leader.

Felipe Cabrera Sarabia, known as "The Engineer," allegedly ran operations for the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico's most powerful, in the northern state of Durango and in part of the northern state of Chihuahua, Chief Army spokesman Gen. Ricardo Trevilla told a news conference. Cabrera, wearing a bulletproof vest, was paraded before the news media in what has become a common practice for law enforcement authorities following major arrests.

Many experts and law-enforcement officials believe the reputed leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, has been hiding in the mountains of Durango. Authorities say Guzman is Mexico's top drug lord, while Forbes magazine has included him on its list of the world's richest men, reportedly worth more than $1 billion. He has eluded authorities since his 2001 escape from prison in a laundry truck, and has a $7 million bounty on his head. Trevilla offered no information about the hunt for Guzman. He only said that Cabrera's capture "will affect the structure and leadership of the Sinaloa cartel."

At the time of Cabrera's arrest, army special forces also seized documents and computer equipment, he said.

Cabrera was nabbed without a shot being fired Friday in the capital of Sinaloa state, headquarters of the cartel, army officials first announced Sunday night.

He will be held for at least 40 days on suspicion of participating in organized crime and drug trafficking.

Trevilla said Cabrera and three of his brothers began as marijuana growers and that Cabrera rose through the Sinaloa ranks by using violence against his rivals.

In recent months, Cabrera waged war against a rival faction of the Sinaloa cartel known as the "Ms", leading to a surge in violence around Durango, he said.

Federal forces have found 14 mass graves containing 287 bodies in Durango state since April.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama and his family are easing into vacation mode, spending a low-key Christmas Eve out of the spotlight.

The president spent his first morning in Hawaii at a multimillion-dollar vacation home his family rents in the Kailua Beach area, near Honolulu. He skipped his standard early morning gym workout, and headed to the golf course later Saturday.

First lady Michelle Obama, meanwhile, got into the Christmas spirit by helping track Santa for NORAD. The North American Aerospace Defense Command has been telling anxious children about Santa's whereabouts every year since 1955.

The White House said Mrs. Obama answered several calls from children around the country who wanted to know how close Santa was to their homes.

The Obamas were to spend Christmas Eve at home with a close circle of family and friends that typically joins the president for his annual Hawaiian vacation. They include Obama's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives in the state with her family, and several friends the president has known since high school.

The president's annual December trip to the state where he was born and mostly raised almost didn't happen. He had planned to arrive in Hawaii on Dec. 17, but delayed his departure while Congress worked its way through a stalemate over extending payroll tax cuts.

A deal was finalized Friday morning. Hours later, the president boarded Air Force One for Hawaii to meet his wife and daughters, who traveled ahead of him.

Obama's first order of business when he arrived was taking his wife out to dinner. The couple joined a few friends at Morimoto restaurant, one of their favorite dining spots on the island of Oahu.

The president has no public events planned in Hawaii. A small group of advisers accompanied him to brief him on domestic and international developments.

The Obamas are expected to return to Washington shortly after New Year's Day.

UK's Prince Philip remains in hospital (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's Prince Philip has spent a third night in the hospital as he recovers after treatment for a blocked coronary artery.

Buckingham Palace officials say the 90-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II is in good spirits and will remain under observation for "a short period."

The prince underwent a successful coronary stent procedure after he went to the hospital on Friday complaining of chest pains.

On Monday he is likely to miss the Royal Family's Boxing Day shooting party, which he usually leads.

Philip is known to be active and robust, appearing at many engagements ? most recently taking a 10-day tour of Australia with the queen.

Six of Philip's grandchildren, including Princes William and Harry, visited him Sunday in the hospital.

Noise-free spectroscopy: Reversing the problem clarifies molecular structure

ScienceDaily (Dec. 23, 2011) ? Optical techniques enable us to examine single molecules, but do we really understand what we are seeing? After all, the fuzziness caused by effects such as light interference makes these images very difficult to interpret. Researchers at the University of Twente's MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology adopted a "reverse" approach to spectroscopy which cleaned up images by eliminating background noise.

The researchers presented their findings in Physical Review Letters.

Rather than starting with the laser beam, the trick is to take the molecule you are studying as the starting point. This radical "reversal" led to a relatively simple modification of conventional CARS spectroscopy, which delivered better images. CARS was already a powerful technique which used lasers to visualize molecules for such purposes as food testing and medical imaging. One advantage is that no fluorescent labels are needed to make the molecules visible. However, background noise complicates the task of interpreting the resultant images. This new approach eliminates such noise completely, leaving only the "real" image. More information than ever before, such as accurate details of the substance's concentration, can be obtained using this technique. It is easier to detect the signature of the molecule in question.

Energy

The key to side-stepping the overwhelming complexity involved lay in Prof. Shaul Mukamel's exhortation to just "Look at the molecule!" (the professor, who holds a post at the University of California, collaborated on the present publication). So don't focus on the way that light interacts with the molecule, as this makes it very difficult -- even impossible -- to "separate the wheat from the chaff" and reveal the real image. Instead, start by examining the energy levels inside the molecule. Previous work, based on Prof. Mukamel's exhortation, has mainly led to the development of new theories. The University of Twente researchers have now translated this theory into the new technique of Vibrational Molecular Interferometry, which will vastly expand the uses of CARS and other techniques.

This study was conducted in Prof. Jennifer Herek's Optical Sciences group. The research group is part of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology of the University of Twente. The study was funded in part by the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM), and partly from the VICI grant previously awarded to Jennifer Herek by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).

The publication, entitled "Background-free nonlinear microspectroscopy with vibrational molecular interferometry," by Erik Garbacik, Jeroen Korterik, Cees Otto, Shaul Mukamel, Jennifer Herek and Herman Offerhaus, was published on 16 December, in the online edition of Physical Review Letters.

As Christmas arrives, crisis for Mideast Christians

While Christians in Iraq have long faced the threat of growing Islamism and violence, now Christians in Egypt ? and Syria ? are facing new pressures as a year of dramatic change wraps up.

This fall, a group of Iraqi-American Christians ramped up pressure on the Obama administration, warning that their ancient community in Iraq ? already hobbled by eight years of war ? could be pushed over the brink entirely after US forces withdraw by year's end.

Recently, Vice President Joe Biden responded.

"Basically, we got a letter back saying: Iraq is undergoing a great democratic process and we should take advantage of that," says Robert Dekeileta, a lawyer who volunteers with the Chaldean Assyrian Syriac Council of America. "It doesn't take into account that democracy for us is a little bit frightening because a lot of forces in society are opposed to non-Islamic entities like ours."

This year of dramatic political change in the Arab world ? with dictators falling in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya; a violent uprising threatening Bashar al-Assad's grip on Syria; and popular agitation for democracy in Yemen and elsewhere ? has opened up the real possibility that entrenched autocracy and despotism will be replaced by governments more responsive to their people.

But the experience of political change for Iraq's Christians is a reminder that democracy is one thing, but protecting against the tyranny of the majority is something else again.

Now, the largest Christian community in the region ? the Copts of Egypt ? fear that their position, status, and ultimate security in a country where they are in many ways already second-class citizens is about to erode further due to democratic change.

In Syria, too, where Christians make up about 8 percent of the population, there is fear the uprising will lead to an Islamist government more hostile to Christians than Mr. Assad's regime was. They're well aware of the risks of sectarian conflict and persecution, having witnessed Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war and, more recently, the Iraq war, which spurred tens of thousands of Christians to flee to Syria.

At least half a million Iraqi Christians have fled Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003, diminishing their community ? estimated at 1 million to 1.4 million before the war ? to a mere 500,000 under the pressure of sectarian killings, church attacks, and an increasingly Islamist political culture.

Alec Baldwin rules out NYC mayoral run (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? Alec Baldwin says he won't run for New York City mayor -- because he isn't "horny" for the office like other candidates -- and suggested he may stay with "30 Rock," the show he had long been expected to leave after this season.

The announcement comes soon after a patch of bad publicity for Baldwin after a dispute on an American Airlines flight. He has previously described himself as "very, very interested" in running for office.

"I've lost my appetite," Baldwin said on his weekly WNYC podcast Wednesday, adding that the other candidates are "like a guy on a date that you can tell he just can't wait to get his hand up your blouse before even the lights go out in the theater."

He added: "They're all just so horny for it."

Baldwin's "30 Rock" contract ends after this season, and he said in October that he wanted to move on. But he also said at the time that he might do "a piece of the year" after this season.

On Wednesday, however, Baldwin suggested that sticking with "30 Rock" would be better than trying to run for mayor.

"Give this up for what?" he said. "I give up money and fame and position and success; I give up this wonderful life I have now in exchange for the chance to 'really change things?'... Yeah, I'm not quite sure you can anymore."

Baldwin was ejected from an American Airlines flight earlier this month after he refused to shut off his phone, which he was playing a game on.

Egypt rejects "interference" after Clinton remarks (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Egypt said Wednesday it would not accept any interference in its internal affairs, following criticism by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of the way security forces dealt with women protesters.

In a speech Monday, Clinton criticized the actions of Egyptian security forces as showing "systematic degradation" of women that "disgraces the state," some of the strongest U.S. language used against Egypt's new rulers.

Footage showed Egyptian soldiers beating protesters with batons, often after they had fallen to the ground, in what activists described as a forcible attempt to clear a sit-in demanding a swifter transfer to civilian rule. Five days of clashes since Friday left at least 13 dead and hundreds wounded.

"Egypt does not accept any interference in its internal affairs," the state news agency quoted Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr as saying.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Amr Rushdi told Reuters Egypt held frequent talks with other countries about its transition from military to civilian rule, "to clarify the reality on the ground and the obstacles facing the country during this transitional phase."

A video of Egyptian soldiers dragging a woman protester on the ground by her black full-body veil, exposing her bra, then clubbing and kicking her, has sparked outrage. Thousands marched on Tahrir Square Tuesday to condemn the attacks.

Activists have called for a major protest Friday to demand an apology for the attacks on women.

The United States, which saw deposed leader Hosni Mubarak as a staunch ally, gives Cairo $1.3 billion a year in military aid, a commitment that began after Egypt in 1979 became the first Arab state to make peace with Israel.

Congress moves to restrict aid to Egypt, Pakistan (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Congress would impose restrictions on aid to Egypt, Pakistan and the Palestinian Authority in a $53.3 billion bill that avoids the deep cuts in foreign assistance and State Department funding that Republicans had pursued this year.

The legislation is part of a sweeping, $1 trillion-plus year-end spending package that provides money for 10 Cabinet agencies through September. The House passed the measure on Friday and the Senate is expected to vote sometime this weekend.

Foreign aid amounts to just 1 percent of the federal budget, but lawmakers intent on cutting the deficit, especially conservative tea party Republicans, have clamored for significant reductions in spending overseas. Democrats and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton pressed to spare the accounts.

The legislation would provide $53.3 billion for foreign assistance and the State Department ? $42.1 billion for the base budget and $11.2 billion for the Overseas Contingency Operations account. That account pays for the State Department's role in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and other expenses. Lawmakers shifted costs for security and economic assistance, funds for the State Department and for the U.S. Agency for International Development into the account, increasing the amount from $7.6 billion to $11.2 billion.

Still, the base budget is some $6 billion less than the current level and $8.7 billion below what President Barack Obama sought for the fiscal year that began Oct. 1. The bill does provide $3.1 billion in security assistance for ally Israel.

"In a difficult economic and political climate, this bill meets our national security needs and global responsibilities while implementing tough restrictions and requirements on recipients of U.S. assistance," said Rep. Nita Lowey of New York, the top Democrat on the Appropriations subcommittee that oversees foreign aid.

Reflecting concerns about uncertainty within the Egyptian government, the bill would block release of $1.3 billion in security assistance to Cairo and $250 million in economic assistance until the secretary of state makes several assurances to Congress. She must certify that Egypt is abiding by a 1979 peace treaty with Israel and that military rulers are supporting the transition to civilian government with free and fair elections and "implementing policies to protect freedom of expression, association and religion and due process of law."

The military took over in Egypt after longtime President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular revolt in February. On Friday, Egypt held its second round of parliamentary elections.

The legislation freezes aid to Pakistan until the secretary can certify that Islamabad is cooperating on counterterrorism, including taking steps to prevent terrorist groups such as the Haqqani network from operating in the country. The aid amount was unspecified in the legislation as Congress gave the Obama administration flexibility to figure out the funds.

A separate defense bill would hold back $700 million for Pakistan until the defense secretary provides Congress a report on how Islamabad is countering the threat of improvised explosive devices.

The bill continues the existing restrictions on aid to the Palestinian Authority, requiring the secretary to certify that it is committed to a peaceful co-existence with Israel and is taking appropriate steps to combat terrorism. Economic assistance for the Palestinians is in jeopardy if they pursue statehood recognition in the United Nations over the objections of the United States and Israel, which wants to resume talks.

The amount was not spelled out, again leaving it to the administration to sort out.

The restrictions carry a waiver for national security.

In a victory for congressional Democrats and the Obama administration, the bill dropped a House-backed ban on federal money for international family planning groups that either offer abortions or provide abortion information, counseling or referrals.

The policy has bounced in and out of law for the past quarter century since Republican President Ronald Reagan first adopted it 1984. Democrat Bill Clinton ended the ban in 1993, but Republican George W. Bush re-instituted it in 2001 as one of his first acts in office. Within days of his inauguration, Obama reversed the policy.
