Bobbie replied to Bobbie's discussion Indefinite Military Detention Of US Citizens To Be Signed Into Law By Obama

And, here's another one!!? My senators voted YEA on this bill - both Republican!!? I have written them a letter telling them they have some explaining to do!!!!? You can check at the link below entitled NDAA 2013 to see if your senator signed it.

ARTICLE:

We?ve been trying to keep you aware of what has been taking place with the talks concerning the 2013 version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). We?ve covered the Feinstein amendment, which effectively did nothing, except to empower Congress to authorize the military at their whim to violate people?s 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendment rights. But now the talks are all done and the legislation is headed for Barack Obama?s desk to be signed into law soon, just as it was nearly one year ago today, including provision to use the military to indefinitely detain US citizens.

Previously, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) voted for the Feinstein amendment to the NDAA. But then there came the hashing out of language in the bill and Paul blasted Senator John McCain (R-AZ) for stripping away the amendment.

?We had protection in this bill. We passed an amendment that specifically said if you were an American citizen or here legally in the country, you would get a trial by jury,? Paul said. ?It?s been removed because they want the ability to hold American citizens without trial in our country. This is so fundamentally wrong and goes against everything we stand for as a country that it can?t go unnoticed.?

The problem with Paul?s assertion is that there was no protection for anyone, whether they are a citizen of the US, a permanent resident or a visitor. Rights that are supposed to be protected under the Constitution be damned! Neither the NDAA, nor the amendment proposed protected one person who is on American Soil.

Paul called the NDAA an ?abomination.? It is that, but so was the Feinstein amendment and even more so because it was deceptive at its core.

The Senate easily passed NDAA 2013 by a vote of 81-14. The next stop is Obama?s desk.

UPDATE: People are asking when the House passed NDAA for fiscal year 2013. The links have been provided. This one comes from the one at the end of the article, ?Obama?s desk.? Here?s the screenshot. They passed it first in May and then the final passage took place one day before the Senate passed it; December 20.

status ndaa

UPDATE: Additionally some have asked for the language in the bill. Here is section 1033, which I provided a link to in the article. You can also read my comments and others on the article I wrote concerning this ... Congress gave their authorization (unconstitutional as it was) last year in Section 1023 of the 2012 NDAA.

SEC. 1033. PROHIBITION ON THE INDEFINITE DETENTION OF CITIZENS AND LAWFUL PERMANENT RESIDENTS.

Section 4001 of title 18, United States Code, is amended?

(1) by redesignating subsection (b) as subsection (c); and

(2) by inserting after subsection (a) the following:

?(b)(1) An authorization to use military force, a declaration of war, or any similar authority shall not authorize the detention without charge or trial of a citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States apprehended in the United States, unless an Act of Congress expressly authorizes such detention.

UPDATE: Ben Swann has just released a video explaining the amendment.

Measuring Search Engines Advertising Campaigns

Advertising Search Engines provides the best means of placing the PPC Advertising on the internet which will attract many eyeballs for sure. This opportunity of presenting consumers with the PPC advertisements tailored to meet their immediate buying interests encourages consumers to click on searchads instead of unpaid search results, which are often less relevant and appealing. By smart and innovative way of advertisement designs all the customers tend to click on the ads thus driving higher traffic and revenues to the publishers.

This PPC Advertising is sold and delivered on the basis of keywords by all the Advertising Search Engines. Keywords are the phrases or queries that the internet users search for on the search engines to get their desired information. The keywords that the PPC ad campaign uses can be more than a single word in length. The Advertising Search Engines conduct running auctions to sell ads according to the bids received for keywords and relative relevance of user keywords to ads in the account. However, some keywords are more expensive and some are offered at a very low price based on their demand for the internet users. Also, Profit potential of the keywords also takes into account for the bids made on ads that advertisers want to display when the keywords are searched by the user.

All these bidding and selling of PPC Advertising on the Advertising Search Engines is measured using five different parameters. The advertisers have to pay according to the type of paying options they choose to pay the publishers. Let???s see here at all the five of them.

Cost Per Click (CPC):
CPC or Cost Per Click is an Internet advertising model used to direct traffic to websites, where advertisers pay the publisher when the particular ad is clicked. Advertising Search Engines offers advertisers to typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. However, content sites generally charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system. In traditional marketing, CPC was viewed as a one way process of reaching target audiences through means such as direct mail, radio ads and television ads whereas of now two way contacts are possible through web based chat, Internet based calls, call back requests or mailing list sign ups and more.

Cost Per Action (CPA):

CPA or Cost Per Action is an online advertising pricing model, where the advertiser pays for each specified action linked to the advertisement. The CPA can be determined by different factors, depending where the online advertising inventory is being purchased. Affiliate networks operate on a CPA basis. CPA systems function most effectively when sales cycles are short and easily tracked. Longer sales cycles and sales requiring multiple customer contacts can be difficult to track, leading to reluctance by publishers to participate in CPA programs beyond initial lead generation.

Cost Per Mille (CPM):

Cost Per Mille or CPM also called as Cost Per Thousand is a commonly used measurement in advertising like TV, Radio and Online advertising. CPM remains the most common method for pricing banner ads.

Click Through Rate (CTR):

CTR or Click Through Rate is a way of measuring the success of an online advertising campaign for a particular website as well as the effectiveness of an email campaign. It measures the number of times an ad is clicked as a percentage of views of the Web page on which the ad appears.

Total Minutes (TM):

Total Minutes or TM is a metric used by net ratings to measure the total time spent on a Web page rather than the number of Web page views.

Certainly, PPC Advertising campaigns can produce immediate results by driving maximum traffic in less time and thus adding up to the revenues.

Northeast cities could get up to 6 inches of snow

The snow flying in the Ohio Valley is moving into Philadelphia, New York and Boston, with three to six inches of snow expected in NYC. The Weather Channel's Chris Warren reports.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

A second, smaller winter storm will hit the Northeast Friday night and into Saturday, dumping up to 6 inches of snow in major cities and up to a foot and a half of snow in less populated areas. But it won?t pack nearly the punch of the one earlier this week that brought twisters, high winds, icy roads, power outages and record snowfall, and that led to at least 17 deaths and thousands of grounded flights, affecting tens of thousands of holiday travelers.

"This storm will move at a rather brisk pace, so we don't expect any overwhelming snow amounts," weather.com reported.

The corridor from Philadelphia to New York City and Hartford, Conn., is expected to see snow totals in the 2 to 5 inch range, and more in the suburban and outlying areas, weather.com added. Boston?could see 4 to 6 inches of snow "if the low-pressure system tracks close enough to the coast."

For New York City, the snow should be just enough to create a "postcard" setting for sledding and strolling, NBCNewYork.com reported.

More storm coverage at weather.com

Washington, D.C., is looking at 1-3 inches, NBCWashington.com was forecasting. Some of that snow is likely to mix with rain.

Freezing rain -- making for treacherous travel conditions -- was predicted for parts of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia while significant rain was likely along the New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland coasts, the?National Weather Service?said.

It won't be a blockbuster snowfall, but most of the big cities in the Northeast will get one to three inches of snow. The Weather Channel's Chris Warren reports.

The weather service forecast 12 to 18 inches of snow for northern New England, accompanied by freezing rain and sleet.

Tom Olney, a 50-year-old stay-at-home father of two, was making plans to go sledding with his children in their hometown of Wayland, Mass.?

"We love snow," Olney told Reuters. "What else are you going to do when it's this wet and cold out?"?

Western Massachusetts, like much of the Northeast, had an uncharacteristically mild winter last year, but residents such as Olney say they are ready for a more typical cold season.?

"Mother Nature doesn't usually give you two in a row," he said. "We've still got a lot of supplies from last year, so I guess we're ready for it now."?

Eleven inches of snow was forecast for Buffalo, N.Y., where some 8 to 12 inches of snow fell overnight into Thursday. Prior to that, Buffalo was 23 inches below average for this time of year, the weather service said.

"It's just a reminder: Winter is here," said Tom Paone of the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

The earlier winter storm was tied to at least 17 deaths and?forced the cancellation of thousands of airline flights. It?dumped record snow in north Texas and Arkansas before sweeping through the South on Christmas Day and then veering north, where the Adirondacks got 20 inches of snow.

More than 2,000 flights have been canceled, and more than 200,000 customers are without power in several Southern states as the impact of severe winter weather was felt across the nation. NBC's Eric Fisher reports.

It also triggered tornadoes and left almost 200,000 homes and businesses in Arkansas and Alabama lost power on Wednesday.

In Arkansas, 106,000 homes and businesses were still without power Friday afternoon, and the state's largest utility said many might not get it back until after Jan. 1.?

Deena Brazell spent a night in her car for warmth, though she hadn't planned it that way.

"Everything in the apartment is electric. I stayed in the apartment the first night. After that, it got cold really quick," she told The Associated Press. "I went out to charge the phone and fell asleep, then I just decided to stay."?

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

Ice and snow changes our environment, as winter engulfs our world.

Retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf dies

H. Norman Schwarzkopf, the retired general credited with leading U.S.-allied forces to a victory in the first Gulf War, has died at age 78, a U.S. official confirmed to ABC News.

He died today in Tampa, Fla., a U.S. official told the Associated Press.

Schwarzkopf, sometimes called "Stormin' Norman" because of his temper, actually led Republican administrations to two military victories: a small one in Grenada in the 1980s and a big one as de facto commander of allied forces in the Gulf War in 1991.

"'Stormin' Norman' led the coalition forces to victory, ejecting the Iraqi Army from Kuwait and restoring the rightful government," read a statement by former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Gulf War. "His leadership not only inspired his troops, but also inspired the nation."

Schwarzkopf's success during what was known as Operation Desert Storm came under President George H.W. Bush, who said today through his office that he mourned "the loss of a true American patriot and one of the great military leaders of his generation."

"Gen. Norm Schwarzkopf, to me, epitomized the 'duty, service, country' creed that has defended our freedom and seen this great nation through our most trying international crises," Bush said. "More than that, he was a good and decent man -- and a dear friend."

Bush's office released the statement though Bush, himself, was ill, hospitalized in Texas with a stubborn fever and on a liquids-only diet.

Schwarzkopf, the future four-star general, was born Aug. 24, 1934, in Trenton, N.J. He was raised as an army brat in Iran, Switzerland, Germany and Italy, following in his father's footsteps to West Point and being commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1956.

Schwarzkopf's father, who shared his name, directed the investigation of the Lindbergh baby kidnapping as head of the New Jersey State Police, later becoming a bridgadier general in the U.S. Army.

The younger Schwarzkopf earned three Silver Stars for bravery during two tours in Vietnam, gaining a reputation as an opinionated, plain-spoken commander with a sharp temper who would risk his own life for his soldiers.

"He had volunteered to go to Vietnam early just so he could get there before the war ended," said former Army Col. William McKinney, who knew Schwarzkopf from their days at West Point, according to ABC News Radio.

In 1983, as a newly-minted general, Schwarzkopf once again led troops into battle in President Reagan's invasion of Granada, a tiny Caribbean island where the White House saw American influence threatened by a Cuban-backed coup.

But he gained most of his fame in Iraq, where he used his 6-foot-3, 240-pound frame and fearsome temper to drive his troops to victory. Gruff and direct, his goal was to win the war as quickly as possible and with a focused objective: getting Iraq out of Kuwait.

"If it had been our intention to take Iraq, if it had been our intention to destroy the country, if it had been our intention to overrun the country, we could have done it unopposed," he said at a military briefing in 1991.

He spoke French and German to coalition partners, showed awareness of Arab sensitivities and served as Powell's operative man on the ground.

Powell today recalled Schwarzkopf as "a great patriot and a great soldier," who "served his country with courage and distinction for over 35 years."

"He was a good friend of mine, a close buddy," Powell added. "I will miss him."

Schwarzkopf retired from the Army after Desert Storm in 1991, writing an autobiography, becoming an advocate for prostate cancer awareness, serving on the boards of various charities and lecturing. He and his wife, Brenda, had three children.

Schwarzkopf spent his retirement in Tampa, home base for his last military assignment as commander-in-chief of U.S. Central Command.

ABC News' Dana Hughes, Gina Sunseri and Polson Kanneth contributed to this report.

Security Loophole In Facebook?s Camera App Allowed Hackers To Hijack Accounts Over WiFi

Screen Shot 2012-12-24 at 10.55.10 AMPSA to all Facebook Camera users on iOS: If you haven’t update you app in the past few days, update?it now. The older version of the app, pre-1.1.2 and released before December 21, has a?security loophole. When used over WiFi networks, malicious hackers can tap the network and hijack Camera users’ accounts, picking up information like email addresses and passwords in the process. The white-hat hacker who ID’d the problem is Mohamed Ramadan, an Egypt-based security researcher and trainer with Attack-Secure?who has also found and reported vulnerabilities for Apple, Google, and Etsy — which apparently also had the same loophole in its iOS app. Ramadan tells us that the issue lied in the Camera app’s Secure Sockets Layer certification, which was too open. As he puts it, “The problem is the app accepts any SSL certification from any source, even evil SSL certifications and this enables any attacker to perform Man in The Middle Attack against anyone uses Facebook Camera App for IPhone. This means that the application doesn?t warn the user if someone in the same [WiFi network] trying to hijack his Facebook account.” Testing his theory by using a proxy to listen in on a WiFi network, he was able to type in his username and password into the Camera app, and then see that information appear via the proxy. Ramadan notes that he’s tested all Facebook apps and the rest appear to protect from this similar vulnerability. We’ve reached out to Facebook for comment but haven’t received a response.

Georgia College Receives Highway Safety Grant for Ninth Year in a Row

?

For the ninth year in a row, Georgia College has been awarded a grant to participate in the Georgia Young Adult Program through the Governor?s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).

The $8,230 from the GOHS will be used to combat alcohol abuse, including underage drinking and impaired driving.

?This grant allows us to provide educational opportunities to our students through a variety of means,? said University Health Educator Rachel Sullivan, who serves as the project director.

The university will use this grant to fund events and activities to educate students on the dangers of driving after drinking, high-risk alcohol choices and other highway safety issues.

?Georgia College is committed to educating students as to the very real safety issues and health risk factors involved in the use of illicit or non-prescribed drugs and irresponsible use of alcohol," said Dean of the College of Health Sciences Sandra Gangstead. "The Governor?s Office for Highway Safety, via its grant program, helps support our efforts to provide excellent health promotion programs and services for our students."?

The program is designed for colleges and universities in the state and focuses on peer education to promote and bring awareness to highway safety issues. Those include alcohol education, alcohol abuse prevention, impaired driving, underage drinking, safety belts, speeding, risk reductions and other destructive decisions.

?We host fun events and give away promotional items reminding students to drive sober, always buckle up and make low-risk decisions when it comes to alcohol,? said Sullivan.

In past years, the grant has sponsored trivia night, alcohol awareness week, dive-in movie night and highway safety day, which promotes sober driving.

?We want our students to understand the decisions they make today do have an impact on others tomorrow,? said Sullivan.

The grant runs thru Sept. 30, 2013.?

"This financial support goes a long way to helping our staff ( Health Services, Counseling, Student Affairs, SGA, and Public Safety) ensure our students have ample opportunities to receive the knowledge and skills necessary to make responsible decisions,? said Gangstead.

Reports: Utah State coach Gary Andersen offered Wisconsin coaching job

MADISON, Wis. ? Utah State coach Gary Andersen is considering an offer to become the next football coach at Wisconsin, according to multiple media outlets.

The Wisconsin State Journal was the first to report the news, citing a source close to the Badgers' football program, which said Andersen was athletic director Barry Alvarez's top choice to take over for Bret Bielema, who left for the head coaching job at Arkansas. The State Journal and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel are reporting that Andersen has agreed to take the job, but The Salt Lake Tribune reported late Tuesday night that Andersen to Wisconsin is not yet a done deal and that although he has been offered the job by Wisconsin, he still needed to accept. If he does accept, according to the Tribune, Andersen will take his entire coaching staff with him.

Wisconsin can't make an official hiring announcement until the end of business on Wednesday under the university's hiring rules that require the position to be posted for a predetermined amount of time.

Andersen led Utah State to an 11-2 season and a No. 18 ranking in the Associated Press poll. Utah State hammered Toledo, 41-15, in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Saturday to win its first bowl game since 1994. The Aggies won the Western Athletic Conference title outright and will likely finish the season ranked in the top 25 for the first time since 1961.

Utah State nearly toppled Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium earlier this season before falling, 16-14, when Aggies kicker Josh Thompson missed a 37-yard field goal with six seconds remaining.

Andersen, 48, spent four seasons in charge at Utah State and helped turn around the Aggies' program. Utah State finished 4-8 in each of his first two seasons before a 7-6 campaign in 2011 and the first of two straight appearances in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Andersen is 26-24 at Utah State, including 16-13 in WAC play. Utah State finished 9-38 in the previous four seasons before Andersen.

In addition to serving as a head coach at Utah State, Andersen was head coach for one season at Southern Utah, where he finished 4-7 in 2003.

Andersen possesses a defensive background, which likely appeals to Alvarez. Andersen served as defensive coordinator at Utah from 2004-08 before accepting the head coaching position at Utah State. Bielema, the hand-picked successor to Alvarez, spent two seasons as a defensive coordinator at Wisconsin under Alvarez before becoming the Badgers' head coach. Utah State runs a spread offense, but because Andersen is a defensive-minded coach, he likely would bend to Alvarez's preference to maintain a run-first pro-style offense at Wisconsin.

In 2008, Andersen was named a finalist for the Broyles Award, given annually to the top assistant coach in college football. He also coached for the Utes from 1997-2002, serving as a defensive line coach, special teams coordinator and later assistant head coach.

This season, Utah State ranks No. 15 nationally in total defense (322.1 yards per game) and eighth in scoring defense (15.4 points per game). Both numbers are significant achievements considering where the Aggies began under Andersen. Utah State ranked No. 113 in total defense in Andersen's first season (455.1 yards per game) and No. 107 in scoring defense (34.0 points per game).

A considerable raise could be coming Andersen's way as well. He is making $600,000 per year at Utah State. When Bielema left Wisconsin, his salary was $2.7 million annually.

Andersen had been a head coaching candidate at California and Colorado in the past few weeks but released a statement in late November that he would remain at Utah State. It seems the offer from Wisconsin ? a program set to play in its third consecutive Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 ? might be too good to pass up.

Female Watson On 'Elementary' Started Off As A Joke, Says Creator Rob Doherty

Casting a female Watson on CBS' new hit drama "Elementary" turned out to be a genius idea, but originally, it wasn't meant to be taken seriously.

"It started out as something of a joke," the show's creator Rob Doherty told The Hollywood Reporter about the idea of making Sherlock Holmes' right-hand man Watson a woman. In his research, the "Elementary" showrunner came across psychological assessments of Holmes and one expert noted an aversion to women, which sparked something in Doherty.

"I thought to myself, 'What would make Holmes crazier than taking the figurative rock he has in Watson and making him a woman?'" Doherty told THR. "The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to try it."

His willingness to try it -- by casting Lucy Liu as the Watson to Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock -- has helped make "Elementary" the No. 1 new 2012-2013 series when it comes to total viewers (NBC's "Revolution" is No. 1 in the key 18-49 demographic).

Perhaps the origins of a female Watson shed light on why many fans of the classic Sherlock Holmes were displeased to find out about the sidekick's gender initially. "It is shocking -- not for me because I like things to be turned on their head -- but for some people, it's sort of like making 007 a woman," Liu told The Huffington Post before "Elementary" made its debut. "It just takes time for people to understand that the world isn't going to blow up if Watson is a woman."

And they did. "It's Watson who's brand new. Not just because he's a she, but because she seems to be operating, for the first time, in her own parallel narrative," wrote the "Los Angeles Times" in its review. "Liu gives her Watson the perfect blend of wariness and admiration -- she is clearly brilliant in her own right and while she may be his keeper, she is not his chronicler. And her journey may turn out to be just as interesting as his."

"Elementary" has the honor of airing in the coveted post-Super Bowl slot so check out female Watson and the rest of the CBS drama on Sun., February 3 at approximately 10 p.m. EST. The opportunity is likely to give "Elementary," which has been averaging 14.2 million viewers, a ratings boost since the timeslot is one of the most-watched broadcasts each year. Last year's post-Super Bowl series, "The Voice," had 36.7 million viewers. The year before, an episode of "Glee," had 26.8 million viewers. In 2010, the last time CBS aired the Super Bowl, the network broadcasted the series premiere of "Undercover Boss," which brought in 38.6 million viewers.

  • "Working Girl" (1990)

Yes, it's <em>that</em> Sandra Bullock. The show debuted two years after the movie of the same name hit the big screen, but didn't pick up after the events of the film. "Working Girl" lasted only a few months as a midseason replacement.

  • "Baby Boom" (1988)

Starring Kate Jackson as J.C. Wiatt, the show based on the 1987 flick sent J.C. back to the corporate world after the film ended with the character back in Vermont. The sitcom lasted only eight episodes.

  • "9 to 5" (1982)

Complete with the title song, "9 to 5" jumped to TV in 1982 featuring Rita Moreno in the lead role originally played by Lily Tomlin. Dolly Parton's sister Rachel Dennison took over the Doralee role Parton played in the film. The show ran on ABC from 1982-1983 and was brought back in first-run syndication from 1986-1988.

  • "Paper Moon" (1974)

Jodie Foster and Christopher Connelly took on the roles originated by Tatum and Ryan O'Neal in the film version from 1973. The series lasted 13 episodes on ABC.

  • "Ferris Bueller" (1990)

Primarily known because Jennifer Aniston co-starred, "Ferris Bueller" lasted only a few months on NBC. Airing four years after the original movie, "Ferris Bueller" wasn't a continuation of the movie. In fact, the Ferris character references the film and his dislike of Matthew Broderick's portrayal of him.

  • "In The Heat Of The Night" (1988)

One of the more successful movie to TV adaptations, "In The Heat Of The Night" aired from 1988-1995 on two different networks. Based on the flick -- and the book -- of the same name, the show starred Carroll O'Connor as William Gillespie and Howard Rollins Virgil Tibbs.

  • "Clueless" (1996)

Originally airing on ABC before moving to UPN, "Clueless" starred many of the same actors who took part in the 1995 movie. Two notable recasts included Alicia Silverstone replaced by Rachel Blanchard and Heather Gottlieb taking over the role of Tai from Brittany Murphy.

  • "M*A*S*H" (1972)

Yes, one of TV's most successful shows was based on a movie. Based on the 1970 series of the same name, the 1972 TV CBS series would go on to become one of the most beloved shows on TV. Its finale had more than 125 million viewers, breaking records.

  • "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997)

Before Sarah Michelle Gellar there was Kristy Swanson. The Joss Whedon series started out as a 1992 film of the same name. After the movie was taken in a different direction than Whedon wanted, he brought the character back on The WB. And the rest is history.

  • "Uncle Buck" (1990)

Kevin Meaney took over the role of Uncle Buck for the TV series based on the 1989 film starring John Candy. In the series, Buck is named the guardian of his brother's children after his brother and sister-in-law die in a car accident. In the film, Uncle Buck is just a babysitter. The show lasted one season on CBS.

  • "Fast Times" (1986)

Starring Patrick Dempsey and Courtney Thorne-Smith before they were household names, "Fast Times," a sequel to the 1982 movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" lasted only a handful of episodes on CBS.

  • "Police Academy" (1997)

Based on the hit comedy film series, "Police Academy: The Series" served as a spin-off of sorts. Michael Winslow was the only film actor to regularly appear on the syndicated series. It lasted one season. "Police Academy" also had an animated series that ran from 1988-1989.

  • "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures" (1992)

Different than the 1990 CBS animated series, Fox's "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventures" lasted only seven episodes and featured none of the film actors.

  • "Casablanca" (1983)

Set before the classic film, the 1983 "Casablanca" TV series lasted for only a handful of episodes. David Soul and Ray Liotta starred in NBC's take on the 1942 film. The first "Casablanca" TV series ran in 1955.

  • "Delta House" (1979)

One of the many attempts at turning "Animal House" into a TV series, "Delta House" lasted for 13 episodes on ABC. The show followed Josh Moste as Jim "Blotto" Blutarsky, the brother of John Bleushi's film character, Bluto, and was also home to a young Michelle Pfeiffer.

  • "Friday Night Lights" (2006)

"Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose." NBC and DirecTV's "Friday Night Lights" was based on the Billy Bob Thornton film and book "Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream." Starring Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, the series quickly became a fan-favorite and lasted for five seasons. A movie sequel of the TV series -- yes, a movie of a TV series based on a movie -- is reportedly in the works.

  • "My Big Fat Greek Life" (2003)

Remember when "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" took the county by storm? Well, it was so popular that CBS adapted the film into a TV series starring Nia Vardalos. There were some differences between the two, including name changes and occupations and it only lasted seven episodes.

  • "The Odd Couple" (1970)

Technically, both "The Odd Couple" TV series and film were based on the Neil Simon play. ABC's "The Odd Couple" lasted for five seasons and starred Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. Both Randall and Klugman picked up Emmys for their work on the series.

  • "Planet of the Apes" (1974)

Based on the 1968 film, "Planet of the Apes" lasted only 13 episodes on CBS. The series starred Roddy McDowall, Ron Harper and James Naughton. It was canceled following low ratings, but later re-edited to become TV movies.

  • "RoboCop: The Series" (1994)

One of the many TV versions -- a few others being animated -- "RoboCop: The Series" lasted for 22 episodes in 1994.

  • "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (2008)

A cult favorite, "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" lasted two seasons on Fox. The series picked up in 1999 after the events of "Terminator 2," but Sarah Connor (Lena Headey) and John Connor (Thomas Dekker) was soon transported to 2007 to battle Skynet alongside Cameron (Summer Glau), a reprogrammed Terminator. Despite fan support, the series was canceled by Fox after plummeting ratings.

  • "Eastwick" (2009)

Based on the 1984 novel "The Witches of Eastwick" and 1987 film of the same name starring Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer, "Eastwick" followed two failed pilots. Though it did better than its predecessors, "Eastwick" lasted only a handful of episodes before ABC yanked the series.

  • "10 Things I Hate About You" (2009)

Based on the 1999 Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles film of the same name, the ABC Family series lasted two seasons before getting canceled.

  • "Parenthood" (2009)

NBC's beloved family drama is based on a wacky dramedy 1989 film starring Steve Martin. Hailing from "Friday Night Lights" veteran Jason Katims, the series follows the Braverman family as they navigate life. This is the second TV series based on the film. Ed Begley Jr., Thora Birch, Leonardo DiCaprio and David Arquette starred in the 1990 TV series. <em>The fourth season of "Parenthood" premieres Tues., Sept. 11 at 10 p.m. ET.</em>

Updated today at 6:40 PM

TOWN AND COUNTRY, Mo. (KMOV) ? A hairdresser for a Town and Country retirement community is accused of using a master key to steal more than $85,000 worth of items from seven apartments over a five-week stretch in 2011.

Kerri Spink, 39, was charged Wednesday with first-degree burglary, six counts of second-degree burglary and three counts of felony stealing.

Police said Spinks stole a master key to rooms at the Garden Villas Retirement Communit in the 13500 block of S. Outer 40 Rd.

Between Sept. 27 and Nov. 12, 2011, authorities said Spinks used the key to break into seven apartments and steal valuables, including cash, collectible coins, jewelry and Sterling silver. The items valued a total of $85,487. Police said the jewelry valued at $50,620 was later recovered.

She is also suspected of removing a necklace from a victim while working on her hair.

According to a police report, Spink broke into an apartment when the resident was home, but left without taking anything.

Spink?s bail was set at $50,000.

Panetta orders probe of military day care centers

(AP) ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Tuesday ordered a worldwide review of hiring practices at all U.S. military day care centers after the Army revealed that it discovered problems with security background checks of workers at a Washington-area center.

Shortly after the Army said it was launching an investigation of hiring practices at its 283 day care centers worldwide, Panetta's press secretary, George Little, issued a statement saying Panetta supports the review.

Little said Panetta has directed each of the military services to conduct similar reviews. The actions stem from the Sept. 26 arrests of two Army employees accused of assaulting children at a Fort Myer, Va., day care center. But the problem there apparently is much deeper; indications are that at least 30 workers at the Fort Myer facility have histories that call into question their suitability to care for children, two officials said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation into worker backgrounds at Fort Myer is not completed.

"Military children are precious members of our Defense Department family," Panetta said. "As a department, protecting our service members and their families is paramount."

After the Fort Myer arrests, the Army replaced the day care center's management team and found what the Army called "derogatory information" in the background of an unspecified number of other employees there.

Army officials did not reveal the derogatory information.

In addition, Fort Myer began a review of the background files of about two dozen other day care workers to determine whether they should be fired, the Army said. That review apparently is ongoing.

"The safety of the children under our care is our most important responsibility," said Col. Fern Sumpter, the Fort Myer commander. "The quality of their care and safety has been and will continue to be our most important priority."

Sumpter said the day care center was closed "out of an abundance of caution" and the children moved to a separate day care center at Fort Myer. A Fort Myer spokeswoman, Mary Ann Hodges, said the center was closed on Dec. 13.

Of the two Fort Myer day care workers who were arrested, one faces five counts of assault and the other faces four counts of assault, according to the Army.

Based on the findings at Fort Myer, Army Secretary John McHugh said Tuesday he ordered an Army-wide review of hiring practices and management at every day care center.

"These initial findings are not only troubling, they are unacceptable, and we will make certain that adequate policies and procedures are in place, and that they are strictly followed and fully enforced," McHugh said.

Banned Ads In 2012 - Business Insider

zombie ad banAs 2012 comes to a close, it's time to remember the ads that were deemed too risqu?, disingenuous or gratuitous to make it to glossy magazine pages or commercial breaks.

These are the most eyebrow-raising ads that were banned around the world this year.?

They were kicked off the airwaves for everything from showing naked models to promoting dangerous driving to depicting brain-loving zombies to offending elderly dudes with the implication that an?"older man does not receive any [sexual] attention due to his age."

CSN: Eagles fumble away game against Bengals

December 14, 2012, 2:30 am

They came early and often, and then they just wouldn?t stop.

It was like a nightmare that wouldn?t end, each turnover more haunting and damning and mind-boggling than the previous one.

The Eagles had a chance Thursday night to prove that they?re not the abject failure that they?ve been for almost two full seasons now. They had a chance to seize the momentum from a buzzer-beating road win four days earlier, parlay it into their prime-time home showdown against the Bengals and win consecutive games.

But they fumbled it away in the most literal sense possible.?

They turned the ball over five times and had a punt blocked in their 34-13 unraveling at the hands of Cincinnati before an ashamed Linc crowd (see Instant Replay). All of those Bengals points came off either Eagles turnovers or a botched special teams play.

?Turnovers killed us today,? said wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, one of five different culprits who coughed up the pigskin. ?This was on the offense and special teams today.?

In an almost surreal sequence that might never happen twice in the next 100 years, the Eagles managed to give the ball back to the Cincinnati four different times in a span of five plays in the second half. Within that time frame, they actually turned the ball over on three consecutive plays.

Their sorriest display of ball security since a five-turnover game in the season opener against Cleveland -- yep, Ohio hasn?t been kind to them -- turned a three-point halftime lead into a double-digit deficit going into the fourth.

Nick Foles threw an interception for the first time since his starting debut, Bryce Brown botched a handoff and Clay Harbor fumbled in a four-play span of the third quarter that directly led to 17 unanswered Bengals points in just five minutes and 37 seconds.

That?s nearly three points a minute.

?We just have to protect the ball. It?s as simple as that,? Foles said. ?Most of the time that will win you a game if you can hold onto the ball.?

Defensive tackle Cedric Thornton, who plays special teams, put the icing on the cake early in the fourth when he let a short kickoff bounce off his chest and into the arms of Bengals safety Taylor Mays.

Cincinnati hadn?t produced six turnovers in a game since Nov. 11, 2007 in a win against Baltimore -- more than five years ago.

The Eagles (4-10) have now turned the ball over 34 times this season and opponents have scored 123 points off those giveaways. Their turnover ratio for the season fell to minus-22, tied with Kansas City for the NFL?s worst.

?It has to be a bigger sense of not just yourself but of the organization,? said wide receiver Jason Avant, who was not responsible for any turnover, said. ?When you're carrying the football, you're representing the Eagles fans, you're representing Mr. [Jeffrey] Lurie, you're representing the coaching staff. I think it has to become more than just about you. When you carry that football, you're representing a whole bunch of people, and I don't think we have that mindset all the time."

The Bengals merely had to get off the bus to win their first prime-time road game in more than 17 years and break their streak of 10 consecutive road prime-time defeats.

Cincinnati?s 249 total yards were its second-fewest of the season and fewest this year in a win. The Bengals averaged 3.4 yards per play, their lowest since a 26-10 loss to the Jets on Nov. 25, 2010. They haven?t won a game averaging 3.4 yards per play or fewer since they beat the Dolphins 16-13 on Sept. 19, 2004.

?Everything happened so fast,? Brown said. ?We were up and the next thing you knew, we were down big. This was a rough loss. We hate to lose like that any competitor would.?

The shame is that these turnovers overshadowed what looked like the Eagles? best defensive effort of the season -- maybe even the past two seasons.?

The defensive line was all over Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, churning out a season-high six sacks, its most of the year by two. Defensive end Brandon Graham set a career single-game best with 2? sacks and rookie defensive tackle Fletcher Cox added 1? more.

The Eagles even forced two turnovers for the first time since Nov. 5 against New Orleans. But that couldn?t help them overcome the comedy of mishandles and mishaps that they showcased to an NFL Network audience.

?Five turnovers and 31 points -- that really says it all,? coach Andy Reid said, leaving out the blocked punt and ensuing field goal from the first quarter. ?I thought the effort was there and guys played hard, but you just can?t have those turnovers.?

The slimmest notion that Sunday?s thriller over Tampa had set the stage for a four-game win streak to close the season and perhaps save Reid?s job slipped away like any one of six mesmerizing miscues that gift-wrapped another win for the Bengals (8-6).

?You have to take care of the ball,? Reid later added. ?There?s nothing I can say about that, but it?s my responsibility to to make sure the guys do it. I take full responsibility and full blame for that.?

Water-Saving Showerhead Pumps Every Drop Full Of Air

Your typical water saving showerhead manages to reduce the flow by simply using smaller holes. But the downside is that those eco alternatives don't provide quite the same showering experience. So a Japanese company has developed a brilliant alternative that aerates the water so a reduced flow still feels like an indulgent deluge. More »

Dark Ages scourge enlightens modern struggle between man and microbes

Friday, December 14, 2012

The plague-causing bacteria Yersinia pestis evades detection and establishes a stronghold without setting off the body's early alarms.

New discoveries reported this week help explain how the stealthy agent of Black Death avoids tripping a self-destruct mechanism inside germ-destroying cells.

The authors of the study, appearing in the Dec. 13 issue of Cell Host & Microbe, are Dr. Christopher N. LaRock of the University of Washington Department of Microbiology and Dr. Brad Cookson, UW professor of microbiology and laboratory medicine.

Normally, certain defender cells are programmed to burst if they are either invaded by or detect the presence of pathogens, Cookson explained. This host defense mechanism called pyroptosis ("going up in flames") eliminates places for the germs to reproduce. As it splits open, the cell spills a cauldron of antimicrobial chemicals and emits signals to alert of an attack and its precise location. Tissues become inflamed as more cells arrive to fight the infection.

The bacteria are widely believed to be behind the great pestilences of the Middle Ages in the 1300s. The pathogen had evolved a tactic to delay provoking people's protective inflammatory response until it was too late. Plague claimed an estimated 30 percent to 50 percent of Europe's 14th century population.

"People and pathogens have been in an eternal struggle since the dawn of humanity," Cookson said. With a hand over hand gesture he explained, "Humans continuously ratchet up their defenses, and germs repeatedly find a way around them."

During several medieval epidemics, the plague started in rats. High-jumping fleas transmitted it to and between humans. It commonly caused lymph nodes to rupture. Respiratory forms were more deadly. They damaged the lungs and were spread by sneezing. Plague bacteria in the blood stream ended lives through sepsis, in which the burden of infection overwhelms the body.

Today, the plague-causing bacteria are still circulating in the world. It is held at bay by sanitation measures and drug treatment.

Plague is now rare, with fewer than 15 infections annually in the United States. The number of cases outside the United States is significantly larger, but not precisely known. Plague therefore remains of scientific interest for several reasons.

The Yersinia survival strategy against the programmed death that could kill it and its host cell may offer ideas for vaccine development, Cookson said. At present, no vaccine exists against the plague. Yesinia is of concern as a potential biological warfare pathogen because it can be aerosolized and unsuspectingly breathed into the lungs. Vaccines are being sought to offer widespread public safety, as are methods for enhancing people's overall infection-fighting capacity.

Yersinia's techniques for modulating an inflammatory response also offer scientists an overarching perspective on a fundamental aspect of a variety of important diseases.

"Many medical problems stem from too much or too little inflammatory reaction," Cookson said. People who launch an insufficient inflammatory response, or whose inflammatory response is suppressed by medications, are prone to viral, bacterial and fungal infections.

"On the other hand, excessive or improperly regulated inflammatory responses are responsible for a large number of chronic conditions," Cookson said. These include vascular flare-ups leading to stroke or heart attack, and autoimmune diseases, among them lupus, juvenile diabetes, ulcerative colitis and myasthenia gravis. Severe injury also can promote life-threatening lung inflammation.

Additionally, plague isn't the only pathogen to enhance its virulence by sidestepping the inflammatory cell death program. Several other dangerous germs do the same, but in different ways.

Usually immune system clean-up cells that have been breached by an infection assemble a molecular platform called an inflammasome. This assembly, the researchers explained, activates a powerful, protein-cleaving enzyme called caspase-1. The enzyme is made ready to go in the presence of noxious stimuli, including germs, inorganic irritants, and pore-forming toxins.

To survive, Yersinia pestis must disarm caspase-1. Until the present study, bacterial molecules that directly modulate the inflammasome had not yet been reported. LaRock and Cookson were able to identify a leucine-rich protein secreted by Yersinia pestis that binds and disables its arch-enemy, the caspase-1 enzyme.

The potent substance, called Yop M, preempts the activity of caspase-1 and sequesters the enzyme to arrest the development of the inflammasome. As a consequence, the cell fails to sacrifice itself to get rid of the Yersinia and to warn other disease-fighting cells of the infection.

According to the researchers, the Yop M-mediated inhibition of caspase-1 is required for Yersinia to subvert immune signaling, delay inflammation and provoke severe illness. Its dual mechanism for blocking inflammatory cell death, by blocking enzymatic activity and inflammasome maturation, is distinctive.

While caspase-1 is helpful in combating a number of other microbial infections, several researchers have reported it to be harmful when its activation is aberrant or poorly controlled. Faulty caspase-1 regulation is implicated in several inflammatory disorders. Learning how pathogens manage caspase-1 to their advantage may suggest treatments to limiting its excess activity.
