Georgia College Receives Highway Safety Grant for Ninth Year in a Row

For the ninth year in a row, Georgia College has been awarded a grant to participate in the Georgia Young Adult Program through the Governor?s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS).

The $8,230 from the GOHS will be used to combat alcohol abuse, including underage drinking and impaired driving.

?This grant allows us to provide educational opportunities to our students through a variety of means,? said University Health Educator Rachel Sullivan, who serves as the project director.

The university will use this grant to fund events and activities to educate students on the dangers of driving after drinking, high-risk alcohol choices and other highway safety issues.

?Georgia College is committed to educating students as to the very real safety issues and health risk factors involved in the use of illicit or non-prescribed drugs and irresponsible use of alcohol," said Dean of the College of Health Sciences Sandra Gangstead. "The Governor?s Office for Highway Safety, via its grant program, helps support our efforts to provide excellent health promotion programs and services for our students."?

The program is designed for colleges and universities in the state and focuses on peer education to promote and bring awareness to highway safety issues. Those include alcohol education, alcohol abuse prevention, impaired driving, underage drinking, safety belts, speeding, risk reductions and other destructive decisions.

?We host fun events and give away promotional items reminding students to drive sober, always buckle up and make low-risk decisions when it comes to alcohol,? said Sullivan.

In past years, the grant has sponsored trivia night, alcohol awareness week, dive-in movie night and highway safety day, which promotes sober driving.

?We want our students to understand the decisions they make today do have an impact on others tomorrow,? said Sullivan.

The grant runs thru Sept. 30, 2013.?

"This financial support goes a long way to helping our staff ( Health Services, Counseling, Student Affairs, SGA, and Public Safety) ensure our students have ample opportunities to receive the knowledge and skills necessary to make responsible decisions,? said Gangstead.
