Fresh rumors on next Samsung Nexus, new HTC Facebook phone offered by Digitimes

Let's offer a little context right off the bat -- Taiwanese tech rumor site Digitimes has an at-best patchy record when it comes to reports on unannounced devices. So naturally we'd recommend taking these latest Samsung and HTC rumors with a hearty pinch of salt.

First off, it's reported that Samsung has once again been chosen by Google to produce its next Nexus handset -- the follow-up to the Galaxy Nexus that's expected to appear in late 2012. ?Digitimes ?says that Samsung's position as the leading Android smartphone manufacturer means Google will continue to co-operate with it on future Nexus phones, leveraging "its ability to control the supply of key components", according to the site's sources. This is the first rumored (and of course entirely unconfirmed) information we've heard regarding the 2012 Nexus, which would be the third Google flagship phone to come out of Samsung. The phone would presumably be the reference device for the next version of Android, said to be codenamed "Jelly Bean."

In other news, ?Digitimes? also reports that HTC and Facebook are preparing to team up on another Facebook phone, which will come to market "in the third quarter of 2012 at the earliest." The two companies co-operated on the HTC ChaCha (Status) and Salsa last year, though neither device was met with much success. The new phone, which is said to be running Android, "will have a platform exclusive to Facebook to enable and integrate all functions available on the social networking site", according to the site's sources. That's pretty vague, but based on the direction Facebook's taking its official Android app, we wouldn't be surprised to see Facebook integration baked into the native camera and messaging apps, at the very least.

So there you have it -- two rumors, both completely unconfirmed. We'll have to see how things pan out in the months ahead, but we wouldn't be too shocked if either of these turned out to be legit. We've seen some pretty aggressive expansion out of Facebook recently, and we're sure no-one would be surprised to see yet another Samsung Nexus.

'Twilight' Star's Nude Photo Scandal Rare For Young Cast

Kiowa Gordon's leaked pics might seem standard for young Hollywood, but 'Twilight' Tuesday notes that the cast has largely avoided scandal.

With all the glitz and glamour associated with being a young celebrity in Hollywood, it's hard to imagine there are any cons to fame and fortune. It's safe to say that one of the more precarious aspects of being universally recognized is the fact that any time a celebrity does anything worth a tweet, photograph or snarky comment, they have the potential to generate many a headline.

The amount of news coverage a star commands depends, of course, on the level of public interest, for which the minute details in the lives of Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and the "Twilight" cast are of great importance.

A lot of the newer stars find out about their headline-generating factor the hard way, as has been the case with Kiowa Gordon and a batch of private photos that were posted to a pornographic website. Never mind the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the incident; by all appearances, Gordon is doing his best to resolve the matter and move on. The "nude photos discovered" headline is so prevalent in pop culture that it's almost expected.

Speaking of expectations, because there are so many ways in which a young celeb might be photographed doing something naughty — they're teenagers, for cryin' out loud! — I think we can all take a moment to appreciate the fact that on the whole, the entire "Twilight" cast has done an excellent job in upholding the ideals associated with their role-model statues. There have been a few leaked photos here and there but no evidence of any kind of truly inappropriate behavior that is often associated with young stars. It really is an amazing feat when you think about how many young actors we're talking about and how scrutinized they are. When I think about some of the dumb things I did in my teens, I thank my lucky stars that Facebook and Twitter were not around. I can't even begin to think about how difficult it would be to navigate as a young celebrity.

So as much as we love to obsess over our favorite stars, let's try to not sweat the small stuff and appreciate them for being worthy of our continued admiration.

We'll soon be putting Fujifilm's new interchange able shooter through our own wringer, but in the meantime we found an apt low-light comparison with two of its non-reflex brethren. Although blogging photog Steve Huff admits the tests are "crazy" and depend on the camera's own auto-exposure choices, the results do give some food for thought. How would the pricier rangefinder-bodied X-Pro1 stack up against the Sony NEX-7 and Olympus OM-D E-M5? If we had to guess -- and we really do, given his methodology -- the noise levels on the Fuji at ISO 3200 and 6400 look to be slightly better than the Sony and smaller-sensored Olympus. ITC judge finds Apple in violation of Motorola WiFi patent

Motorola scored a win with the US International Trade Commission this week in its on-going patent battle with Apple. The commission's Judge Thomas Pender ruled that Cupertino is in violation of a Motorola WiFi patent -- one of four patents included in a complaint filed by the RAZR maker back in October 2010. Before the ITC actually goes so far as blocking the import of Apple products, however, the ruling is subject to review by the commission. The decision follows another patent win for Motorola, handed down by the ITC yesterday in a dispute with Microsoft.

[Editorial] Can Sony?s Digital Imaging Division Restore Profits?

As many of you have probably already read, Sony Corp announced that it is cutting 10,000 jobs, which translates to 6% of its global workforce. Sony has been struggling with negative profits for four straight years, mainly due to its floundering television division. But what does this mean for Sony?s camera division? With the television sector likely getting the main force of the cuts, will Sony rely on growth in their digital imaging division to make up for the numbers?

Sony lost a lot of money in televisions last year. Their sales and operating revenue (to external customers) was down to 238,194 million yen from 416,914 yen last year, a staggering 42.9% loss over 12 months. Though Sony will likely cut jobs from across the company, I am willing to bet a majority of those jobs will be in the televisions division. Those folks just don?t seem to be able to develop the kind of technology they need to compete at a cost effective price point. If they could, Sony wouldn?t be in this mess right now.

But as camera folks, what happens in to their television division is not really the concern for us. Let?s instead focus on what Sony is touting to be a big winner: their camera division.

Sony was particularly proud of the successful expansion into the mirrorless camera market with the Alpha NEX series. In their 2011 annual report, they bragged about their now 15% share in the global market for interchangeable lens digital cameras, up 5% from fiscal year 2009. They then make the promise to ?increase their lineup of interchangeable lens digital cameras and take decisive steps aimed at cultivating this new market category.? They even highlight the NEX series as a major point in their ?Focus Areas For Growth? segment of their Annual Report.

Sony?s choice to cultivate the expansion of their non-reflex cameras is not just based on their sales. According to the Camera and Imaging Products Association, 2011 saw ?non-reflex? cameras take a 23.2% share of the total interchangeable lens camera market. That?s huge, as this means mirrorless cameras have jumped yet another 10% in market share since 2010. However, about 37% of the total global market for these cameras was sold in Japan. Sure, success in Japan is great, but a product requires steady and even global distribution to hold on to success. With such a large chunk of share based solely in Japan, the question can be asked: ?Do mirrorless cameras have a future??

In Sony?s case, they are banking on it. Their DSLR sales haven?t been able to compete with Nikon or Canon. In fact, I just checked Amazon.com, and the only Sony product to make their Top 50 Digital SLR Cameras clocks in at a resounding 41st place. Almost sad really. That means the core of their sales business has to come from their Cyber-Shot series, their Alpha NEX series, and their video camera division. Their cyber-shot business seems to be doing moderately well, shipping 24 million units in 2011, which is up 3 million units from the previous fiscal year. Their video camera division holds a strong 43% market share, with 5.2 million units sold worldwide. They plan to expand their Handycam line and introduce 3D models that, they promise, will deliver better picture and sound quality as well as introduce a model featuring a built-in projector function.

That?s all well and good, but we need to look at the hard facts: The second most losing area of Sony?s consumer products division (and their second most losing overall) behind Televisions, was their Digital Imaging division. They only sold 120,179 million yen worth of digital cameras, down from 188,477 million yen from the previous year. That?s a 36.2% drop, which is not far from their struggling televisions division. Oh, did I mention that for as many years as televisions have been struggling, so to has the Digital Imaging division? Ouch.

To lose that much money, yet still claim success and growth in both Cyber Shots and video cameras leads me to believe their biggest losses were in mirrorless and DSLRs. If Sony is going to try and make a real run in this area, they?re going to have to do better. Obviously a 15% market share in mirrorless cameras isn?t enough to make up for their feeble DSLR share (which, I might add, remained conspicuously absent from their 2011 annual report).

Of course, Sony is also relying on their tablet sales (which I can tell you right now are nothing like Apple?s iPad sales) and phone sales. However, you can?t deny the size of the Digital Imaging division. It?s the second largest piece of Consumer Products, the largest segment of their company. They have to be relying on future camera success.

My Super Food List ? Bipolar Out Loud

I?ve changed my diet a lot in the past couple months and I?ve had many people asking me more about it. So this is my ?Super Food? list. Pretty much everything I eat comes from this list. It?s all pretty much whole foods which is a very good thing to strive for in a healthy nutrition plan. Cutting out?processed foods,?sugary?drinks and artificial sweeteners is a must.?I break my guidelines once in a while when I go out to eat and there are some added spices in my cooking here and there I don?t have on my list, but this is a great start to a healthy diet. Of course though, everything comes in moderation. Although I do eat some sweets and fats, they are in moderation and I?m a serious calorie counter. I average 1200 to 2000 calories per day depending on my workout and activity levels. My health and fitness site that I love so much and I would be lost without is My Fitness Pal. It?s totally free and easy to use and there is a great supportive community of other people working toward a healthier life there. It?s like Facebook for fitness and weight loss junkies. It helps me keep track of my daily activity and?exercise?and track my food intake and calories along with it so I make sure I?m always on the right track. So here?s my SUPER FOODS LIST! Please note, there are plenty more good for you whole foods out there, this is just my list that I stick to. It?s much easier to keep track of my eating if I stick to a few basics that I know and like.

Calif. student living with teacher moves out after arrest

A California student who left school, her family and her friends to live with her teacher boyfriend has ended the relationship after the teacher was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting another girl 14 years ago.

"He called me from jail and yes, I told him that we're done," Jordan Powers, 18, told ABC News in an exclusive interview. "I lost everything for this guy. I lost my senior year. I gave up all my friends at high school because they didn't agree with me."

James Hooker, 41, was arrested in Modesto, Calif., on Friday after police discovered he had an an alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student in 1998.

Hooker has been under investigation for his involvement with Powers, his former business class student, with whom he appeared on national TV programs earlier this year to profess his love.

Hooker was charged with one count of oral copulation with a minor and is in jail, according to a statement from Modesto police.

"He told me that he met her online and he hung out with her just as friends and then he went to her house and she came out of the bathroom naked and he only touched her boobs and her legs," Powers said. "He was freaked out so he left and went home. He said nothing else happened, but all of that was a lie."

Despite the charges, Powers said nothing happened romantically between her and Hooker prior to her 18th birthday.

The teen said she believed the woman came forward now to help her see the truth about Hooker and rescue her from the relationship.

"My heart dropped. I felt betrayed. I just have a gut feeling there are other girls," Jordan Powers said.

Her mother, Tammie Powers, has publicly tried to end the romance from the beginning and expressed relief at Hooker's arrest.

"It's my contention all along that he used authority and that he's a predator," she said.

But a reconciliation between mother and daughter isn't happening just yet.

Jordan Powers said she is staying with a family friend in another state while she recovers from her heartbreak.

"How could he lie to me for all these months and look me in the eye and tell me he loves me?" she said. "I don't know how someone could have such a cold heart."

Omar Suleiman, Mubarak's no. 2, enters Egypt's presidential race

Omar Suleiman, the right-hand man of former President Hosni Mubarak, announced today he will enter the race to become Egypt?s new leader after Mr. Mubarak was forced out by a massive uprising last year.

Mr. Suleiman's decision raises the possibility that, one year after an uprising that was spurred in part by the Mubarak regime?s brutality, torture, and oppression, one of the architects of that repression could become Egypt?s first post-Mubarak president. ??

Some see his candidacy as a response by Egypt?s military rulers to the Muslim Brotherhood?s recent decision to field a presidential candidate ? a decision that broke a year-long promise to stay out of the race. Omar Ashour, a visiting fellow at the Brookings Doha Center in Qatar, says Suleiman?s candidacy raises the possibility that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), which is currently ruling Egypt, may rig the elections to favor the former intelligence chief.

?His nomination is a bad sign,? says Dr. Ashour. ?It's a sign [SCAF] may support him and commit fraud. ? it seems the rift between [SCAF] and the Brotherhood is wider than many estimated.?

The Muslim Brotherhood, whose political party won nearly 50 percent of the seats in recent parliamentary elections, said in recent weeks that the military had threatened to rig the elections in favor of a military-supported candidate. The group?s leaders said the Brotherhood was forced to nominate a presidential candidate to thwart threats to Egypt?s democratic transition, in what many interpreted as a power struggle between the two dominant forces in Egyptian politics ? the Islamist Brotherhood and the secular military.

In a statement announcing his candidacy, Suleiman promised to ?complete the goals of the revolution? and ?achieve the hopes of the Egyptian people, including security, stability, and prosperity.? His entrance into the race has been rumored for weeks, but came just days after he announced he would not run for president. In today?s statement, he said he reversed course to "answer the call of the people."

Suleiman led Egypt?s feared intelligence service for nearly two decades until Mubarak appointed him vice president in a failed attempt to quell last year?s uprising. It was Suleiman who announced on live television that Mubarak had stepped down on Feb. 11, 2011.

During Suleiman's tenure as director of Egypt?s General Intelligence Directorate, the ardent anti-Islamist oversaw crackdowns on the Muslim Brotherhood, as well as the extraordinary rendition of suspected terrorists. Under that practice, the US sent such suspects to countries including Egypt, which tortured the suspects ? on Suleiman?s watch and allegedly sometimes at his own hands ? to extract information, and reported the information back to the US.? According to rights advocates, he is responsible for decades of abuse and torture. One suspect who the US delivered to Egypt for interrogation, Ibn Al Shaikh Al Libi, revealed, under torture, supposed Al Qaeda ties to Saddam Hussein. That information, which turned out to be false, was used to bolster the US case for war in Iraq in 2003.

For years, Suleiman was not only intelligence chief, but, as Mubarak?s trusted deputy, one of the president?s connections to the US. He often spoke with US officials. He also oversaw certain portfolios in Egypt?s foreign affairs, like Palestinian reconciliation.

Many Egyptians loathe Suleiman. And in a sign his campaign might not fare well, those who were associated with the former regime fared poorly in the parliamentary elections. Some analysts say he is unlikely to win a fair election. But some Egyptians feel that he could bring security and stability back to Egypt, which has been rocked by protests and instability in the year since the uprising.

?I will vote for Omar Suleiman if he runs,? said mechanic Mohamed Ahmed last week. ?The Brotherhood took the parliament; I don?t want them to take the presidency, too. Suleiman is experienced, and he can make Egypt stable again.?

(NaturalNews) Since the Dark Ages when the black plague swept through Europe, few diseases in human history have elicited such a deadly combination of fear and ignorance. In this modern age full of the wonders of technology, cancer is our greatest fear, and our greatest unknown. A UK poll found the highest percentage of respondents, one in five, feared cancer over anything else, including Alzheimer's, heart attack, or job loss. Even more disturbing, fully a third believed whether they got cancer or not was up to fate, that there was nothing they could do to reduce the risk.To exacerbate the problem, a recent Reuters article admits that recent cancer research is unreliable at best, if not completely fraudulent. C. Glenn Begley, former head of global cancer research at Amgen Inc., chose 53 'landmark' publications for his team to double-check and build on for future drug development. Out of the original 53, he was only able to replicate six. Scientists at Bayer conducted a similar project and were only able to reproduce less than a quarter of the 47 cancer projects they had previously conducted. Begley wrote in the journal Nature, "It was shocking. These are the studies the pharmaceutical industry relies on to identify new targets for drug development. But if you're going to place a $1 million or $2 million or $5 million bet on an observation, you need to be sure it's true. As we tried to reproduce these papers we became convinced you can't take anything at face value."

Meanwhile, the pharmaceutical industry, always looking to profit from the public's fear and ignorance, continues to develop cancer drugs, usually based on fewer than half a dozen research publications that are pseudo-scientific at best. Then, the Big Medical/Big Government mafia continues to play God by pushing these 'treatments' on sick people as if they are the only option.

97 percent of cancer research money goes into treatments and early detection, while the other 3 percent is invested in fighting the causes of cancer. Logic dictates that to truly fight a disease, the cause should be removed. A great example of this is the Western cholera epidemic of the 1800s. With no knowledge of germs or antibiotics, the problem was traced to what seemed to be the most logical cause, contaminated water sources. Once these were removed, the cholera receded. Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, a founding board member of Doctors Without Borders, wrote, "It is ironic to think that if we had had antibiotics at the time, and had counted on them to deal with the disease as we count today on anticancer treatments, we might never have controlled cholera."

It doesn't take a pharmaceutical rep or a rocket scientist to understand that cancer is caused by environmental factors. The most common cancers are far more prevalent in the West, not Asia, yet when Asians move here they are just as prone. It is true that cancer runs in families, except that adopted children often share the cancer of their adoptive, not biological parents. People who eat or avoid specific foods are more or less prone to cancer, as are those exposed to certain chemicals for certain lengths of time. If cancer is caused by environmental factors, could it not be cured removing those factors and giving the body's immune system the nutrients it needs to fight off the cancer? It may not be as profitable, but might it save more lives?

The foundation of the modern cancer industrial complex is built on sand, and it's starting to crumble. And now, the mainstream media has openly admitted that the research the pharmaceutical companies rely on can no longer be trusted.

This new approach should have three components: an economic one that uses Russia?s anticipated entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) to boost support for rule-of-law and build stronger commercial ties; a diplomatic one that involves? much closer coordination with European allies to present a united front to the Russians; and more firm and clear promotion of human rights and media freedom in Russia.

First, the economics.

In December, Russia reached agreement with the WTO and its members ? including the United States and European governments ? on the terms of its accession. All that remains is for the Duma, or parliament, to ratify the accord. While Putin has been somewhat skeptical of WTO accession, there is no other choice for Russia if the new government wishes to modernize an economy that?s overly dependent on oil and gas exports.

The US and Europe should push Russia to complete its entry into the WTO and then begin close monitoring of its implementation of trade rules. As with China, the process of adopting and enforcing those rules is likely to be slow. Just as the US and European Union pushed together for Chinese adherence to WTO rules on protection of intellectual property, so they must cooperate closely to gain Russian adherence to those rules and others.

WTO membership presents a valuable opportunity to strengthen rule-of-law in that country ? including laws on contracts, property ownership, and investment protection. The US European Union should also support Russian organizations, including business associations, that seek to make WTO membership an effective and practical reality.
