The 7 deadly sins of personal finance | Finance Guide

Being a little richer in theory is not complicated. Just learn to spend less, and if not enough learning to earn some extra money. But we are not entirely rational beings, and we have to deal with our emotions and predispositions. Let?s talk about which would be the 7 major sins to a person seeking to improve their personal finances.

Lust

No need to think about sex. In personal finance, fantasizing about what you would do with more money, about what you could buy, and imagine rich is a form of lust. Do not waste time dreaming about how nice it would have more money. Leave that to those who waste your money playing the Euro Millions.

sins of personal finance

Gluttony

This is what happens when you get things too rushed. Those yearning for success can lead you to risk too much, for example by choosing investments with high returns (i.e., high risk), or putting up too much of your personal savings to invest with leverage strong.

Avarice

Money is not everything in life. Spend the savings, just think about which will be your next move to get some benefit not going to make you happier.

Laziness

Decisions put off until tomorrow that could be taken today to improve your economy (especially cut costs or find a new job), or dedicate yourself to doing only the part you like about the difficult things are significant risks. It is also a form of laziness think you can pay tomorrow what you cannot today and use credit.

Anger

Being angry is often the emotional response to the frustration of not getting what you want at any given time. Altered but no use at all, better relax, analyze what you did wrong and correct.

Envy

Envy and the need to show others an image of social success lead to catastrophes in personal finance. Focus on you, who you are and who you want to be. Define your goals in life and forget what you may think of others.

Pride

Never believe you?re right in everything. Good results have been achieved so far do not mean that you are going to get in the future. One thing is confidence in yourself (essential) and quite another pride. Listen to the opinions of others and learn. Humility often can save you a very wrong decision.

These are the 7 deadly sins for the investor who seeks to improve their personal financial situation. There is certainly more dangerous, but if you can hold off these temptations, you have a good chance of getting your financial goals.

Affordable Care Act upheld ? Washington now ahead of most states | Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler

Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler expressed great relief with the U.S. Supreme Court?s decision upholding the Affordable Care Act and said Washington state is now well ahead of most states in reforming its health care system.

Many reforms are currently in place, but key benefits and programs take effect in 2014, including Washington?s new Health Exchange, federal subsidies to help 477,000 people afford health insurance, an expansion of Medicaid for 328,000 poor childless adults and the ban on insurance companies from denying people coverage if they?re sick.

?I?m very pleased the Supreme Court chose to uphold the Affordable Care Act,? said Kreidler. ?We?ve been busy for two years now implementing the reforms and have made great progress, but there?s a lot left to do before 2014. With the court decision out of the way, we can continue our focus on where it should be ? bringing relief to families struggling to find quality, affordable health insurance.?

The millions of Washington state consumers benefitting from the Affordable Care Act?s early reforms include:

?

  • More than 2.4 million people who no longer face lifetime caps on their health benefits.
  • More than 52,000 young adults up to age 26 who have stayed on their parents? health plans.
  • More than 1.2 million people who now have coverage for preventive care with no co-pays or deductibles.
  • More than 60,000 people in Medicare who have saved hundreds on their prescription drugs.

?

Washington state also leveraged millions in federal funds available under the Affordable Care Act to create:

?The Affordable Care Act is not perfect, but it moves us in the right direction and is the only meaningful reform that?s passed in decades,? said Kreidler. ?The debate was clearly contentious, and I?m grateful to have it behind us. But, now it?s time to focus on the work ahead ? more than a million uninsured people in our state are counting on us.?

Embarrassing Facebook status updates exposed

We know what you're doing - the website that exposes your ill-advised Facebook statuses.

We know what you're doing ... the website that exposes your ill-advised Facebook statuses.

Hate your boss? Hungover after a big night? Don?t head to Facebook to vent your feelings.

A new website created by a British teenager highlights the dangers of revealing private information on social networking services.

We Know What You?re Doing exposes the compromising status updates of Facebook and Foursquare users who haven?t set their accounts to private.

?I?m getting so mad right now I hate my boss Jay I hope he dies better yet I feel like killin him,? says Anastasia R, while Thomas L announces that it ?feels great to be not hungover for first Friday in ages?.

Advertisement: Story continues below

WKWYD?s search tool scours Facebook and Foursquare for key words such as "hungover" and ?cannabis? and divides the findings into four categories: ?Who wants to get fired??, ?Who?s hungover??, ?Who?s taking drugs?? and ?Who?s got a new phone number??.

The so-called ?social networking privacy experiment? is the brainchild of 18-year-old web developer Callum Haywood. The British teenager's creation is proving incredibly popular. According to Haywood, the site has received over 400,000 visitors since its launch on Monday.

?I created the website to make people aware of the issues that are created when they post such information on Facebook without any privacy settings enabled,? Haywood told CNN. ?The people featured on the site are most likely not aware that what they post as ?public? can be seen by absolutely anybody, and that Facebook will happily give away this information to other websites via its Graph API.?

While those featured on WKWYD may be surprised to find themselves on the site, the web developer hasn?t used any published information that users haven?t already revealed publicly.

In a post on its website, computer security site Sophos claims that there?s ?nothing slimy or hackerish? about Haywood?s experiment.

Sophos also argues that the responsibility for potentially damaging status updates lies not with Facebook, but with users. ?At the very least, people have got to start paying attention to Facebook's privacy settings.?

Social media expert Jenna Price agrees. ?You need to be really careful of your online presence because it?s your reputation,? says the University of Technology Sydney academic. ?When you go online and trash your reputation, and you do it yourself, you?ve only got yourself to blame.?

According to Price, the public have been given countless warnings about the dangers of failing to protect their privacy online, but many have failed to heed the warnings. To Price, WKWYD? is using humour to deliver an important message. ?I think if it draws attention to complete abject stupidity that?s a good thing.?

WKWYD is not the first site to highlight the risks of oversharing online. Please Rob Me collated public check-ins from social networking services to announce when users would be away from home. Another social media aggregator, Openbook, makes it possible to search public Facebook status updates in real time.

By contrast to Please Rob Me and Openbook, WKWYD is careful not to reveal too many details about the people it features. Haywood only lists users by their first name and doesn?t link to their profiles.

There was some good news today for those who have been caught out by WKWYD. Haywood took to Twitter to announce that he will introduce a new feature tomorrow which will allow anyone featured on the site to request the removal of their post.

To avoid having your private thoughts exposed on WKWYD, Haywood recommends that users head to Facebook?s privacy setting ?and make sure Control Your default Privacy is not set to ?Public??.

professional power equipment - 5 Features To Look For In ...

There are many types of spreaders available for commercial use. Some of these professional spreaders are similar to non-commercial consumer models. There are a handful of features that professional spreaders can contain that will give superior results when being used for landscaping on large estates. Not all spreaders have all of the features that are available. Understanding which of these options is important for a given job can be important when selecting a unit.

Overall Construction

Professional spreaders are similar to any type of professional power equipment. They must be durable and able to withstand hours of constant use over the course of many years. A good quality model will contain a strong frame and axle that will last for a very long time. The hopper should be made from very strong plastic. Some designs include a metal hopper that can help to distribute some types of seeds or fertilizers more easily.

Multiple Outlets

Having more than one port in the bottom of the hopper to distribute seeds can generate a more consistent broadcast of materials. Single-port units are prone to irregular spreading that can require the operator to make several narrow passes over the same area. Multiple ports on the unit can help to create more complete coverage as the grains fall downward and bounce off of the impeller blades in different locations.

Calibration Mechanisms

Calibrating professional spreaders usually involves the ability to adjust the distances between the ports and the impellers blades and sometimes the drop rate of the ports. This can be an important feature because it allows the operator to adjust the machine before every use so that normal wear and tear does not reduce the effectiveness of the unit.

Multiple Distribution Patterns

Landscapers who are using professional spreaders usually need to distribute several different types and sizes of materials. This can include large pesticide grains to small grass seeds. The best way to help ensure that all materials are distributed evenly and effectively is to look for a unit that has multiple distribution patterns. This is usually adjusted through a plate between the hopper port and the impeller blades. A range of different patterns will increase the usefulness of the spreader, regardless of what material is in the hopper.

Overspray Protection

Some landscapers might want to look for units that have small guards on the side. These guards are designed to stop granules from being tossed too far into the field. This type of overspray protection can create more accurate seeding patterns in narrow areas such as along a tree line or between garden fixtures.

Buyer beware: Things that can go wrong with a real estate ...

KRISTIN BROWN-ORR ? Any real estate sale is fraught with intricacies too numerous to count. Every sale is different, with different buyers, different sellers, and different intermediaries. It?s no wonder people find the process so daunting, so full of legalities, documentation, and fine print.

As a home buyer, the more you know about what can go wrong with your real estate purchase, the more prepared you will be to protect your interests. Here are just a few of the problems you could encounter during a home purchase.

Failed home inspection.
If the home you are buying does not pass muster in an inspection, due to health or safety concerns, the seller should fix these issues or extend you a credit or discount on the sale price so that you can have them fixed. If he or she refuses to do so, you have the right to cancel the sale and search for a new home.

Poorly motivated seller. If the seller?s heart is not in the sale, he or she might be prone to missing or canceling appraisals and inspections ? all of which could threaten your purchase.

Seller hasn?t found a new home to move into. If a seller has trouble finding a replacement property and refuses to consider temporary arrangements, you might find yourself in a tricky timing situation ? particularly if you have a closing date on the home you are leaving. Are you prepared to wait it out in temporary housing while you wait for the seller to move out?

Title Issues.
If your seller owes money on the property you are buying, either for repayment of a debt, failure to pay taxes, or because money is owed for work completed on the property, creditors with an interest in that property may take out a lien, rendering the seller unable to sell until those debts are repaid. Meanwhile, the purchase is on hold.

Seller fails to make agreed upon repairs.
If the seller has contractually promised to deliver the property to you in a certain condition and fails to deliver, you have the right to terminate the contract, if you are not prepared to accept the property ?as is.? An alternative to this situation is to talk to your attorney or real estate agent about either requesting a sum of money to complete the fixes yourself, or requesting a hold back ? cash set aside until the work is complete.

Most traditional real estate transactions proceed smoothly, but being aware of the potential pitfalls will give you a leg up on any problems that could arise. That means doing your homework to be aware of your risks.

During the transaction, stay informed to be on the lookout for red flags and keep a watchful eye on the process and you?ll be prepared to address problems immediately and enjoy the home of your dreams.

Watch How Seth MacFarlane Became Ted

One of the more impressive aspects of Ted (in theaters this weekend) are the motion-capture effects that went into creating the world's most foul-mouthed teddy bear. Watching the film (which we did, last night), you never feel like the bear isn't right there among the rest of the cast at all times, cracking jokes while ripping bong hits alongside his best friend, Mark Wahlberg. If this film isn't?on your summer radar yet and you're a fan of dirty, hilarious, R-rated comedy, then throw this sucker on your to-do list this weekend because you may not see a funnier film all year. Oh, we're going there. Ted simply sits you down and proceeds to stuff your face full of the most obscene, offensive and surprisingly sweet comedy, and we loved every second of it.

Of course how much you enjoy the film may have a little to do with how much you enjoy Seth MacFarlane's (Family Guy) comedy. He's dirty, makes a ton of pop-culture references, and will crack jokes about everyone and anyone, no matter your race, skin color or religious beliefs. In Ted, he manages to do it as a teddy bear who magically comes to life after his little boy owner makes a wish on a shooting star, and this new featurette shows you just how they took a grown man and turned him into the kind of teddy bear every (okay, this) 35-year-old dude would love to own.?

Watch it below. Ted hits theaters this weekend.

Computer analysis of EEG patterns suggests a potential diagnostic test for autism at two years old

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? Widely available EEG testing can distinguish children with autism from neurotypical children as early as age 2, finds a study from Boston Children's Hospital. The study is the largest, most rigorous study to date to investigate EEGs as a potential diagnostic tool for autism, and offers hope for an earlier, more definitive test.

Researchers Frank H. Duffy, MD, of the Department of Neurology, and Heidelise Als, PhD, of the Department of Psychiatry at Boston Children's Hospital, compared raw EEG data from 430 children with autism and 554 control subjects, ages 2 to 12, and found that those with autism had consistent EEG patterns indicating altered connectivity between brain regions -- generally, reduced connectivity as compared with controls.

While altered connectivity occurred throughout the brain in the children with autism, the left-hemisphere language areas stood out, showing reduced connectivity as compared with neurotypical children, consistent with neuroimaging research. Findings were published June 26 in the online open-access journal BMC Medicine.

Duffy and Als focused on children with "classic" autism who had been referred for EEGs by neurologists, psychiatrists or developmental pediatricians to rule out seizure disorders. Those with diagnosed seizure disorders were excluded, as were children with Asperger's syndrome and "high functioning" autism, who tend to dominate (and skew) the existing literature because they are relatively easy to study. The researchers also excluded children with genetic syndromes linked to autism (such as Fragile X or Rett syndrome), children being treated for other major illnesses, those with sensory disorders like blindness and deafness and those taking medications.

"We studied the typical autistic child seeing a behavioral specialist -- children who typically don't cooperate well with EEGs and are very hard to study," says Duffy. "No one has extensively studied large samples of these children with EEGs, in part because of the difficulty of getting reliable EEG recordings from them."

The researchers used techniques developed at Boston Children's Hospital to get clean waking EEG recordings from children with autism, such as allowing them to take breaks. They used computer algorithms to adjust for the children's body and eye movements and muscle activity, which can throw off EEG readings.

To measure connectivity in the brain, Duffy and Als compared EEG readings from multiple electrodes placed on the children's scalps, and quantified the degree to which any two given EEG signals -- in the form of waves -- are synchronized, known as coherence. If two or more waves rise and fall together over time, it indicates that those brain regions are tightly connected. (Duffy likens coherence to two people singing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" together. If they can see and hear each other, they are more likely to sing in synchrony -- so their coherence is high.)

In all, using computational techniques, the researchers generated coherence readings for more than 4,000 unique combinations of electrode signals, and looked for the ones that seemed to vary the most from child to child. From these, they identified 33 coherence "factors" that consistently distinguished the children with autism from the controls, across all age groups (2 to 4, 4 to 6, and 6 to 12 years).

Duffy and Als repeated their analysis 10 times, splitting their study population in half different ways and using half to identify the factors, and the other half to test and validate them. Each time, the classification scheme was validated.

"These factors allowed us to make a discriminatory rule that was highly significant and highly replicable," says Duffy. "It didn't take anything more than an EEG -- the rest was computational. Our choice of variables was completely unbiased -- the data told us what to do."

The researchers believe the findings could be the basis for a future objective diagnostic test of autism, particularly at younger ages when behavior-based measures are unreliable. Their most immediate goal is to repeat their study in children with Asperger's syndrome and see if its EEG patterns are similar to or different from autism. They also plan to evaluate children whose autism is associated with conditions such as tuberous sclerosis, fragile X syndrome and extremely premature birth.

Engaged cheerleading coach, 22 arrested for performing sex act on teen basketball pla

Pictures have emerged showing the cheerleading coach accused of performing oral sex on a 17-year-old student kissing her fiance and partying with friends ahead of her arrest.
Megan Crafton, 22, handed herself in to police on June 15 after the teenage boy, who was on the school basketball team, told officers about the liaison in the parking lot of a grocery store in January.
Despite facing the charge of child seduction, Crafton looks very much in love with her fiance in the pictures on her Twitter page, as she kisses him and grins with him for the camera.

One one Instagram photo of the pair, she reportedly wrote: 'He has my whole heart.'
The stunning teacher, who works at Shelbyville High School in Indianapolis, also smiles and pulls faces alongside friends in a far cry from the predatory suspect police have claimed her to be.

Despite admitting to the sexual act earlier this year, Crafton pleaded not guilty to the child seduction charge in court on Friday.
'She wasn't his coach,' Crafton's lawyer, G. Allen Lidy, said. 'She wasn't his teacher. She wasn't his teacher's assistant.'

He pointed out she was the assistant cheerleading coach and did not coach the basketball team.
The 22-year-old is not a teacher and did not coach the student but was in a position of authority.
But Lt. Michael Turner of the Shelbyville Police Department countered: 'We wouldn't be having this conversation if it was her and some other gentleman who doesn't go to the school, or isn't part of the school system, but unfortunately in this case, it was and it made it illegal.
'When she signed on as an assistant cheerleading coach, she took a responsibility that she wouldn't have relations at that school.'

Though the age of consent for sexual activity in Indiana is 16, adults are legally prohibited from having sex with anyone under the age of 18 if they hold authority over them as part of their job.
Police were asked to investigate by the school after rumors have swirled around their employee and senior student since January.
The school refused to comment on the matter because of the ongoing criminal investigation.
Crafton's jury trial is set to begin on September 24. She paid bond on the day of her arrest.

In the court appearance later this year, she is expected to argue that she did have relations with the 17-year-old but that they were legal.
She is expected to argue that, as a cheerleading coach, she did not have supervision over the basketball player who was over the age of legal consent.
Crafton's boyfriend, to whom she is reportedly engaged, has yet to comment about the matter.

(AP) ? A Roman Catholic church official was convicted of child endangerment but acquitted of conspiracy Friday in a landmark clergy-abuse trial, making him the first U.S. church official branded a felon for covering up abuse claims.

Monsignor William Lynn helped the archdiocese keep predators in ministry, and the public in the dark, by telling parishes their priests were being removed for health reasons and then sending the men to unsuspecting churches, prosecutors said.

Lynn, 61, served as secretary for clergy from 1992 to 2004, mostly under Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua.

"Many in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia hierarchy had dirty hands," Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said. "They failed to realize that the church is its people."

Williams said he did not have sufficient evidence last year to charge other officials, including Bevilacqua, who died in January at age 88.

Lynn had faced about 10 to 20 years in prison if convicted of all three counts he faced ? conspiracy and two counts of child endangerment. He was convicted of only a single endangerment count, which carries a possible 3 1/2- to seven-year prison term.

The jury could not reach a verdict for Lynn's co-defendant, the Rev. James Brennan, who was accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy in 1999.

Despite Lynn's acquittal on the conspiracy charge, the trial exposed how deeply involved the late cardinal was in dealing with accused priests.

Bevilacqua had the final say on what to do with priests accused of abuse, transferred many of them to new parishes and dressed down anyone who complained, according to testimony. He also ordered the shredding of a 1994 list that Lynn prepared, warning that the archdiocese had three diagnosed pedophiles, a dozen confirmed predators and another 20 possible abusers in its midst.

Church lawyers turned over a surviving copy of the list days after Bevilacqua died.

Lynn didn't react when the verdict was read, or acknowledge the siblings and other friends and relatives who have accompanied him to court for much of the three-month trial. Several of them were weeping.

The judge revoked his bail and he was taken to jail, although his lawyers plan to ask on Monday that he be granted house arrest until sentencing. No date was set, but the judge scheduled an Aug. 13 presentencing hearing.

The defense also pledged to appeal the conviction.

"He's upset. He's crushed. He's in custody and he didn't want anything else but to help kids," defense lawyer Jeffrey M. Lindy said.

With the verdict, after 13 days of deliberations, jurors concluded that prosecutors failed to show that Lynn was part of a conspiracy to move predator priests around.

The jury, however, did find that Lynn endangered the victim of defrocked priest Edward Avery, who pleaded guilty before trial to a 1999 sexual assault.

Lynn had deemed Avery "guilty" of an earlier complaint on the 1994 list, and helped steer him into an inpatient treatment program run by the archdiocese. But Lynn knew that Avery later was sent to live in a northeast Philadelphia parish, where the altar boy was assaulted.

The victim alleges that he was also assaulted by another priest and his Catholic school teacher. They are expected to be tried later this year.

After the verdict, the archdiocese apologized to clergy-abuse victims and said the church was on a "journey of reform and renewal that requires honesty and hope."

"We are committed to providing support and assistance to parishioners as they and the church seek to more deeply understand sexual violence, and to create an environment that is safe and welcoming to all, including past victims," read the church's statement, which did not reference Lynn directly.

Terence McKiernan, president of BishopAccountability.org, called the verdict "a watershed moment" in the priest sex-abuse crisis.

"Lynn was a smart, able manager who at any time could have called the police, warned parishes, or threatened to blow the whistle," McKiernan said. "He was not a helpless good guy. The only helpless people in this ongoing catastrophe were the children, the many hundreds of boys and girls who were sodomized and terrorized by the men Lynn managed."

More than 500 Roman Catholic priests have been convicted of abuse charges across the U.S., according to his group's count. Lynn is the first church official to be convicted for his administrative actions.

Defense lawyers say Lynn alone tried to document the complaints, get priests into treatment and alert the cardinal to the growing crisis. Church documents show therapists had called one accused priest a ticking "time bomb" and "powder keg."

During the 10-week trial, more than a dozen adults testified about wrenching abuse they said they suffered at the hands of revered priests.

A former seminarian said he was raped by a priest throughout high school at the priest's mountain house.

A nun testified that she and two female relatives were sexually abused by a priest described by a church official as "one of the sickest people I ever knew."

A troubled young man described being sexually assaulted in the church sacristy in 1999 by Avery after the 10-year-old altar boy served Mass. Avery is serving a 2 1/2- to five-year prison term.

"I can't explain the pain, because I'm still trying to figure it out today, but I have an emptiness where my soul should be," another accuser testified.

Seven men and five women sat on the jury, along with eight alternates. Many have ties to Catholic schools or parishes, but said they could judge the case fairly. There are about 1.5 million Catholics in the five-county archdiocese.

Defense lawyers argued that Lynn was merely a middle manager, and perhaps a fall guy for the archdiocese. Lynn himself, during three grueling days on the stand, mused about a question he was asked: "You want me to answer for the whole church?"

Jury foreman Isa Logan, a bank employee and deacon at his independent West Philadelphia church, said he'd have taken a court-martial during his Army service rather than follow unjust orders.

"I'm a human being before I'm a soldier," said Logan, a 35-year-old father of three.

He described the deliberations as sometimes tense.

Philadelphia prosecutors have been investigating the archdiocese for 10 years, since the national crisis erupted in the Boston archdiocese.

"I can assure you, as Monsignor Lynn sits in a holding cell right now, he got the message, and others will get the message as well," Williams said.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is pressing Congress to reach agreement on a transportation bill and a plan to prevent students from having their loan rates double.

Obama says in his weekly radio and Internet address that Congress should do everything it can to help students attain higher education and repair the nation's crumbling roads and bridges.

Congressional negotiators are working on a deal to avert a July 1 doubling of interest rates on federal loans to 7.4 million college students and a separate plan to overhaul federal transportation programs.

In the Republican address, Louisiana Rep. Bill Cassidy says if the Supreme Court doesn't repeal the entire health care law, Congress should repeal what is left and implement common-sense reforms that protect access to health care and lower costs.
